Overview

Director John Woo brings Hong Kong-style martial arts action to this comic book-flavored Mission: Impossible that eschews the complicated plot and political maneuverings of its predecessor in favor of pure, adrenaline-charged thrills. Tom Cruise returns as Ethan Hunt, an operative for the top-secret government agency IMF Impossible Missions Force. Fellow agent Sean Ambrose Dougray Scott has gone rogue, stealing a sample of a deadly synthetic virus named Chimera that could rapidly wipe out the world's population. Ambrose's plan is to sell Chimera to the highest bidder in exchange for shares of stock in the winner's company. Summoned by the new IMF chief Anthony Hopkins in an uncredited cameo role, Ethan is assigned to recruit the help of Ambrose's former lover Nyah Nordoff-Hall Thandie Newton, a gorgeous woman who left Ambrose broken-hearted and who may be able to quickly regain his confidence. Once he meets and spends a night with Nyah, however, Ethan is smitten, and now must both capture Ambrose and keep Nyah alive as she infiltrates a nest of vipers. Sophisticated disguises, gun battles, and high-speed chases are the order of the day, very much in the James Bond mold. Mission: Impossible 2 is based on a story by Star Trek: The Next Generation writers Ronald D. Moore and Brannon Braga, with a script polish by Robert Towne.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
Tom Cruise returns as intrepid Impossible Missions Force agent Ethan Hunt in this supercharged sequel directed flamboyantly by Hong Kong action specialist John Woo The Killer. Summoned from his vacation while mountain climbing, Hunt accepts an assignment from his chief played by Anthony Hopkins with his usual flair: apprehend rogue agent Dougray Scott before he auctions a stolen virus and its antidote to the highest bidder. After he summons agent Ving Rhames, Cruise enlists radiant Thandie Newton, a sophisticated thief and Scott's former girlfriend, in his campaign against the turncoat. Screenwriter Robert Towne coats this rough-edged adventure with a sheen of sophistication, particularly apparent in the seductive byplay between Cruise and Newton. But the picture's punch comes from Woo's inspired handling of the high-octane chases and fights, in which Cruise proves himself surprisingly capable. A bracing shot of pure entertainment, Mission: Impossible 2 is a more-than-worthy successor to Brian De Palma's 1996 Mission: Impossible.
All Movie Guide - Karl Williams
Infused with the comic book sensibilities of Hong Kong-style martial arts cinema, the big-budget sequel Mission: Impossible 2 (2000) features dazzling camera work, wire-work stunts, and blisteringly fast-paced cutting under the assured hand of action director John Woo. At the same time, the film's wafer-thin script responds to criticisms of the first film being too intricately plotted and intellectually rigorous, resulting in an overly simplistic plot and rather flat, uninspired villain (Dougray Scott) that fail to challenge even the most absurd and over-the-top James Bond epics. Like so many sequels to action-movie hits, Mission: Impossible 2 achieves its visual thrills by ramping up the crisis and kinetic set pieces to cartoon proportions, resulting in a film that's exciting if totally unbelievable. Woo's sharp eye and sense of visual sizzle, a surprisingly winsome, almost fey performance by Tom Cruise, a beautiful female lead (Thandie Newton), and a cameo appearance by an unbilled Anthony Hopkins) keep this second impossible mission from going utterly to ground. What's missing from the film, however, is a sense of mystery that would keep this spy genre entry as mentally engaging as it is viscerally titillating.

    I'm sincerly disappointed.

This movie is little more than a collage of cliched fight scenes, explosions, slow-motion car chases, and more fight scenes. The development of the plot is lacking for the sake of special effects. Though the storyline had potential early on, with the introduction of a scientist who needs agent Ethan Hunt to escort him out of the country in order to protect a deadly new disease, the movie crashes with the plane. Also, something that really bothered me was the fact that Cruise's hairstyle for the movie makes him look more like a rugged mountain-man than the sleek, slick, sly agent he plays in MI1. My advice is watch Mission Impossible 1, which is truly a masterpiece, but skip the sequal. And pray that the upcoming Mission Impossible 3 doesn't follow in the footsteps of Mission Impossible 2.

Anyone who hasn't seen this is seriously lacking

This is the most amazing film I have ever seen;crazy, awesome, unrealistic stunts that Cruise does himself! The is the real thing, no stunt double just 100% Cruise!!! Buy a copy for every TV in the house, its worth it. Rock On!!!

THIS ISN'T A MISSION DIFFICULT, MR. HUNT, THIS IS A MISSION IMPOSSIBLE!

TOM CRUISE STARS IN THIS ACTION PACKED SEQUEL TO THE 1995 BLOCKBUSTER, 'MISSION:IMPOSSIBLE'! CRUISE IS BACK AS ETHAN HUNT, A TOP AGENT FOR THE 'IMF'(IMPOSSIBLE MISSION FORCE), TRYING TO STOP A CORRUPT AGENT, SEAN AMBROSE, FROM SELLING A DEADLY VIRUS TO THE TOP BIDDER. HUNT EMPLOYES AMBROSE'S EX GIRLFRIEND, NYAH, TO GET ON THE INSIDE AND FIND OUT ALL SHE CAN. ALONG WITH HUNT ALSO IS THE COMPUTER HACKER, LUTHER(FROM MISSION:IMPOSIBLE 1), HELPING HIM GET TO THE VIRUS BEFORE AMBROSE BEATS HIM TO IT. FULL OF GREAT DISGUIES, COOL GADGETS, SHOOT-OUT'S, MOTORCYCLE AND CAR CHASES, AND A FINAL FIGHT TO THE DEATH BETWEEN ABROSE AND HUNT. OVER ALL, NOT AS GOOD AS THE FIRST FILM, BUT STILL, IT'S, 'MISSION:IMPOSSIBLE'! DEFINETLY FANTASTIC! MUST SEE!!!

    MI2 is worth it man

Listen, I've heard what ya'll have to say and now it's my turn. If there's a movie to rent or buy this is it. Those of you who have said there isn't much good acting in movies now and days then just don't go see them. You're waisting your own time. But I believe that our actors and actresses have tried so hard at making movies people will enjoy you should give them a little respect. Go see it if you already haven't. It's great with the special effects and the stunts.

    ya gotta see this one!

This is the best movie i've seen in a long time. These days the movies only care about the special effects. Don't get me wrong. Effects are awsome if the movie has a good story line too. Mission: Impossible 2 has it all. Good plot, shoot em up, save the girl. It's one in a million!

Pure eye candy but hey, Cruise pulls it off

Great action film which contrasts to the original 'MI1'. MI2 fills the sadly lacking escapism gap of the modern Bond films. A great intro with Cruise rock climbing and again it's not very often stars in action films do their owns stunts. Barretta action scenes and higly sophisticated gadgets. A real must see!

A great failure of a movie.....

Very little can be said about this movie. Don't waste your time with purchasing it. It may be worth wasting $4. on a rental, but thats it! This movie was dull,un-interesting, bland, a travesty of all that is holy in action films. Yes there was a time when an action film had a good story. These days all we get are cartoon special effects, bad acting, and witty one liners my eight year brother thinks are funny. No amount of special features on these discs can be even a little consolation. I only gave it two stars because it made me laugh at how bad a movie can be.

Its a very nice action movie of all that I've seen

Mission Impossible 2 is really wonderful than the first one. Some says that its not good because of too much special effects, but what i can say is that, special effects are okay and its not much for me, and besides, this is an action movie, so definitely needs more effects for this kind of great movie.

    OH, YEAH BABEY

Although a little like the matrix, this movie looked real all the way. Amazing shot of Cruise hanging on a cliff, which was done in real life! Also cool martial arts
