The rescue crew includes Gary Sinise, Jerry O'Connell, Connie Nielsen and Tim Robbins. The screenplay was partially by award-winning playwright Ted Tally, who won an Oscar for his adapted screenplay of The Silence of the Lambs.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Jason Bergenfeld
Blast off to the highbrow with Mission to Mars, a science fiction film more reminiscent of cerebral Carl Sagan's Contact than explosive Roland Emmerich's Independence Day. When America sends its first crew of astronauts to land on Mars, they are sucked into an inexplicable vortex that leaves nothing but destruction in its wake. Faster than you can say "Houston, we have a problem," a rescue team led by Gary Sinise is sent to recover any survivors -- or remains -- of the Mars Exploration Team. The impressive cast includes Tim Robbins, Don Cheadle, and Jerry O'Connell, but it is Sinise's signature intensity that anchors the film, keeping the sometimes-disjointed story on a course toward its thought-provoking ending. Director Brian De Palma uses his first science fiction film to pay appropriate homage to past space exploration films. From the rotating space station to the HAL-like computer voice of the spaceship, Mission to Mars reconnects audiences with the wonder of 2001: A Space Odyssey while pondering the unanswered question of the ages: "Is there life on Mars?"

Mission to Mars is a success!

Mission to Mars was hit in theatres all over the galaxy. With the special effects, the vortex seemed like a black hole/tornado/giant worm. It is an amazing film, and you should definitely buy it and watch it if you like sci-fi films.

    Wow......

This is one of the best movies ive ever seen, if not the best. Im 12 years old, and saw it in school! It was so exciting. I barely took my eyes off the screen. There were some creepy parts, like when Woody took off his helmet while he was falling, and his face froze. (sorry if i spoiled it). But, all in all, this movie was great. If you like space as much as I do, it will be exciting.

    A very bad film!

Watch this movie only if it is a gift and you have nothing else to do, and I mean nothing. I love sci-fi films in general just not this one. Maybe it is ok for a 7 year old or a very slow adult or as a punishment for someone in prison. The special effects are OK but the plot and acting are so bad as to make the movie not worth watching. The science is bad and the film tends to jump over the interesting parts of the story. Please do not waste your money on this one! Get something good like The Matrix, Bladerunner or Apollo 13.

    EXERCISE CAUTION

The viewer of ''Mission to Mars'' must keep in mind that this is a fictional film. An homage to the classic ''2001: A Space Odyssey'' and should not, because of its storyline be considered as the answer to the question of the ''Face'' in the planets Cydonia region. Many people in the conspiracy theory mentality have touted this film as being the cover blower on the truth about extraterrestrial life and others are following these misguided ways of thinking. There is no ''Face'' in Cydonia, just a gigantic volcanic construct. There is no evidence that there ever was a civilization on Mars but the possibility that there MIGHT be fossilized microbial life. ''Mission to Mars'' has a great storyline, but the landing site for the first Mars Exploration Team was chosen in 1988--Mangala Vallis, over 1,000 miles to the south of Cydonia. Ad Inexplorata.

    Not a bad flick....

Mission to Mars is an incredible film. Good plot, good acting, everything about it is good, except the last 15-20 minutes. There were audible groans in the theater when the movie ended. I think the ending is one of the worst let downs I've ever seen. It totally derails the entire force and momentum of the film. If you can forgive the ending, it's not too bad. I'd say rent it first.
