Overview

One would be hard pressed to identify a more multifaceted or ubiquitous food than the chicken egg . The numbers alone are staggering: around 300 million U.S. chickens now lay an average of 100 billion eggs every single year. This educational documentary observes the journey of a typical egg from its origins in a henhouse, to the daily breakfast table. The film begins on sprawling Iowa factory farms, where countless eggs make the journey to delivery trucks without ever once making contact with human hands. The program then moves to cage-free and pasture-raised farmland, where chickens have more room to roam and eat, and therefore produce healthier, more nutritious eggs. The saga defines such terms as "organic" and "grade A" for the viewer, before concluding on a light and humorous note - with a glimpse of the world's largest omelet, made from a single ostrich egg - approximately the same amount of food as two dozen chicken eggs.
