Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
Some Monk fans felt that this delightfully offbeat series started running out of gas in Season 3, but the midseason introduction of a new assistant for the "defective detective" (Tony Shalhoub) helped rev up the show. It's undeniably true that in the 2004-5 episodes Adrian Monk's schtick no longer has the juice it once did, but clever writing and inventive use of new locales keep things peppy. The departure of original assistant Sharona Fleming (Bitty Schram) finds our hero practically climbing the walls at the beginning of "Mr. Monk and the Red Herring." He manages to hold himself together while investigating a home invasion that turns into a self-defense killing when single mom Natalie Teeger (Traylor Howard) is forced to slay the intruder. Monk takes a liking to Natalie and her daughter, Julie (Emmy Clarke), and after solving the mystery he offers the former bartender a job as his new assistant. In "Mr. Monk and the Employee of the Month," Adrian re-teams with his disgraced ex-partner, Joe Christie (Veronica Mars's Enrico Colantoni), who's now the security chief at a big chain store where a falling TV set has apparently killed a model employee. "Mr. Monk Goes to Vegas" begins with a middle-of-the-night phone call from vacationing Captain Stottlemeyer (Ted Levine), who urges Monk to immediately head for Lost Wages and help investigate the sudden death of a casino owner's wife. Monk gets to show his tender side in the season finale, "Mr. Monk and the Kid," when he becomes emotionally attached to an intelligent, sensitive toddler whose discovery of a severed finger puts the eccentric detective on the trail of kidnappers.

Tony Shalhoub is a fine actor whose comedic and dramatic talents are excellently showcased in the Monk series. This show will make you laugh out loud. Glad they finally ditched the character Sharonna. She was really getting annoying with that incessant nasally whine and tacky trailer park outfits. Contrast is great, but her character was tiresome. What was up with that? Anyway, the new assistant is intelligent and classy. This show is a hit!

I disagree, the new assistant is BORING! The show died when Bitty Shram left.

The thing that I like the most about Monk is that he makes the quirks that I notice in myself, seem minor, and he makes me laugh while he solves crimes while trying to keep up with his extreme quirks.

This show is one of the best on tv these days. Funny and quirky Monk provides a good mystery whodonit. Good, clean family fun. Every season gets better.
