Monkees: Our Favorite Episodes

Overview

Absent the complete run of the series on DVD, this disc isn't a bad idea -- four episodes of the classic television series chosen by the four members of the group as their personal favorites: "Hitting the High Seas, "Monkees vs. Machine, "The Frodis Caper, and "Fairy Tale." The selection is inspired and highly representative of the best of the series, although perhaps not surprisingly, three of the four shows come from the series' second season, when the producers and the stars were all of a mind to make the ...

Overview

Absent the complete run of the series on DVD, this disc isn't a bad idea -- four episodes of the classic television series chosen by the four members of the group as their personal favorites: "Hitting the High Seas, "Monkees vs. Machine, "The Frodis Caper, and "Fairy Tale." The selection is inspired and highly representative of the best of the series, although perhaps not surprisingly, three of the four shows come from the series' second season, when the producers and the stars were all of a mind to make the program more daring and experimental. Apart from "Daydream Believer" and "Last Train to Clarksville," there are few major hits represented, but that's fine because the series' real appeal today lies in its humor. The Monkees has aged better than anyone could have hoped at the time, displaying the kind of offhand, satiric wit that modern comedy programming spends ten times as much money and five times as much time striving to achieve, while The Monkees achieved it with an honest freshness that continues to beguile viewers four decades later. Not that there aren't some extraordinary musical moments, though the greatest of them on this disc (and the entire series) don't involve the group directly. During the series' second season, each member was allowed to have one musical guest in a featured spot: (Mike Nesmith had Frank Zappa, Davy Jones had future Wiz-author Charlie Smalls, and Micky Dolenz's guest was Tim Buckley, as a coda to "The Frodis Caper." The show (which marked Dolenz's directorial debut) is an excruciatingly funny send-up of television, sci-fi, and the drug culture; but it also contains an extraordinary coda in which Buckley performs "Song to the Siren" on an acoustic 12-string, in a rendition that is quietly dramatic, poignant, and sad (and also superior to the over-produced "official" version from the album Starsailor). The DVD has no extras, simply some good (and generous) chaptering and an excellent film-to-video transfer, marred only by the presence of lines on the print of "Fairy Tale." Stan Freberg, Severn Darden, Noam Pitlik, and Rip Taylor are the major guest stars.
