Monkees, Vols. 1 & 2

Overview

The first volume in what one hopes will be a release of the entire series The Monkees, this disc is a decent cross-section of the program, comprised of four episodes, two each from the first and second seasons. The first episode, "Here Come the Monkees, is interesting as a sort of rough cut for what the series would become, containing a lot of padding front and back (including the screen tests of Michael Nesmith and Davy Jones and a comic bit involving co-developers Paul Mazursky and Larry Tucker) and not enough ...

Overview

The first volume in what one hopes will be a release of the entire series The Monkees, this disc is a decent cross-section of the program, comprised of four episodes, two each from the first and second seasons. The first episode, "Here Come the Monkees, is interesting as a sort of rough cut for what the series would become, containing a lot of padding front and back (including the screen tests of Michael Nesmith and Davy Jones and a comic bit involving co-developers Paul Mazursky and Larry Tucker) and not enough of the members except for Davy Jones (who gives the first of what were ultimately too many terrible mimed "performances" on guitar); it was still a different kind of television aimed at kids -- the editing, the gags, and the pacing didn't condescend to the audience and, indeed, gave credit to the viewer. The other programs, "The Picture Frame, "Alias Micky Dolenz, and "Hillbilly Honeymoon, all have funny moments and good music, especially when Michael Nesmith provides the songs as he does in "Alias Micky Dolenz" and "Hillbilly Honeymoon." The featured directors include James Frawley, then an actor changing careers who has since had hit films and also done some good episodes of Law and Order. The film-to-video transfer is beautiful, with deep, rich color (which is especially impressive on the second season shows, in which the performance videos took on a more self-consciously "psychedelic" look) and nicely balanced sound, though the volume is a little low. The menu can be a bother -- it opens automatically on start-up, offering the selection of all four shows and "Special Features" (capsule biographies of each of the four stars), but to get back to the main menu once the particular episode is over, one must click twice. Each program gets six chapters, but although the major songs get indexed, there's no designation of them as songs (like quotes around the titles).
