Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Pete Segall
By 1974 Monty Python's Flying Circus was on its last legs. John Cleese had left to work on his own show, Fawlty Towers. The remaining Pythonershad filed a lawsuit against ABC for airing heavily edited versions of their early episodeson late night TV. Monty Python's Flying Circus Set 7, on DVD and VHS, documents the last unadulterated programs, which still retain the group's trademark irreverence and odd wit. (At this point, Douglas Adams, who would go on to write the heavily Python-influenced Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was working on the show.) Some skits from episodes 40-45 include "Bogus Psychiatrists," "The Man Who Finishes Other People's Sentences," "The Golden Age of Ballooning," and "The Most Awful Family in Britain," featuring American Pythoner Terry Gilliam. Although suffering a bit from Cleese's absence, these Flying Circus installments still hold their own next to any other comedies on TV -- then or now -- with an amazing blend of surrealism and slapstick that remains unmatched in television comedy.
