Moon ChildDirector: Takahisa Zeze
An ambitious and stylish action-horror hybrid featuring Japanese pop stars Gackt Camui and Hideto Takarai (aka Hyde) embarking in vampiric John Woo-style gunplay, Takahisa Zeze's Moon Child makes its stateside DVD debut courtesy of TLA Releasing. The picture is shown in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen, but the visual presentation leaves much to be desired. Though free of edge-enhancement, the disc is marred by constant artifacting -- with distracting, dancing pixels evident throughout (especially in the wildly unstable blacks). The already intentionally gritty cinematography is increasingly muddied as well, offering a washed-out image despite generally accurate skin tones and the occasional vibrant blast of color. The Dolby Digital Stereo audio track offers a bold mix with no discernible hiss or distortion. English subtitles are presented in easy-to-read white font with bold black outlines. As for extras, viewers can access a handful of stills from the feature in addition to four trailers (presented in non-anamorphic widescreen) for other TLA Releasing titles.

I didn't think the movie would be all that great at first, considering it was the whole 'musician going into acting' case with both Gackt (Sho) and Hyde (Kei), but both guys ended up fitting into their parts extremely well. While the whole 'angsty vampire and human friend' plot is rather cliche and overdone, it's well used here. I will say, though, that Gackt's character, Sho, sometimes doesn't make much sense later on in the movie, especially how he suddenly 'grows up' mentally and matures within a few years. That's the only big problem, the time jumps. They just weren't smooth and connected enough, leaving some details out that would've clarified the story progression a bit.
This movie is the BOMB! If you're into International movies with major butt-kicking and action packed superstars/singers than this definitely is the movie for you! I personally enjoy Gackt and Hyde's albums as they also sing Japanese Rock. Oh and since I also like vamps and stuff, I can't help to notice the Hyde as a major hottie character. But Gackt~sama is my fave so I'd have to be his fan for the movie! But it's really good. I saw it in Japan when it came out! I'm so glad it's coming out in the states!
I'm a huge Gackt and/or Hyde fan, so when I heard they had a movie... I almost fainted. When I also found that I could order it I almost died! I may be a rabid fan, but I'm not completely biased, so here goes: It's an amazing movie, thought, like said, some of the time changes are slightly confusing. Considering how some other singers act... Gackt and Hyde are very good. A tiny bit rusty on Gackt's part, but it kinda made it feel more... real. Ha. Vampires. Real. X3 Anyway, good movie. Very much reccomended.
Hotestly, I didn't expect much from this movie. I watched it just because my favorite singer, Wang Leehom, was in it. BUT I found this pretty cool. It was amazing to see Gackt, a man of very few words in TV shows, nicely acting a sensitive gangstar, even speaking fluent Mandarin. Yamamoto Taro was essential to add a touchy friendship feeling to this movie. Also with beautiful images and exciting gun actions, even those who don't know these Asian superstars could find this entertaining. I only wish that Hyde was a little bit better actor, though. Well, after all, he is a musician...
woowww~ i love this movie. the entire storyline is so gripping! i cant tear my eyes away if i tried (for more reasons than one *wink wink*) i especially loved how it ended. it was so beautiful and emotional! im in tears!!!!!!!!! this is not meant to be a spoiler so i wont go on about why i reacted as such, SO GO SEE IT cause it is very very very very goooood. i am sooo glad i bought it and i recommend it to everyone. :: v-.-v ::
This is movie is so interesting. I cried a lot while watching it. My favorite character is Kei, played by HYDE. He's the best. He's the vampire. :)
OMG!!!! It was amazing. I loved every little bit of this movie. I can't get enough of it...I watch it over and over and over and over and over...(continues X infinity)...I guess you get the point..¬____¬...I completely love and adore HYDE (Kei), which is pretty much the same thing, but who wouldn't?? even though he's a bit old, I still love him!!! He's like the greatest!!!...*shouts*...HYDE ROCKS!! Hai!! Well, I highly suggest that anyone should watch it, whether or not you know about HYDE or is into Asian hotties, you should totally see it....it's worth every second.
I enjoyed this movie somewhat. For the acting, it seemed to be done pretty well, but I don't speak Japanese or Cantonese, so I couldn't really tell how well exactly (I watched it with subtitles). First time you see this movie, please please please make sure you're fully awake and pay attention, or the most important things will zoom right through. The plot line was nice, even if a little packed (Vampires, gangsters, sci-fi, future setting. the only thing missing is the zombie ninjas from outer space). The time spacing can be confusing at times, but not overly so. I personally find the action to be great, and it's not often that I find myself interested in the fighting scenes, so it's a huge bonus in the movie. I wouldn't suggest seeing this movie because of the plot, because one doesn't really exist (and if it does, for the life of me I couldn't find it). This movie is entretaining enough, and I would recomend seeing it if you're a fan of Asian culture. If you like Western movies more, avoid this as all costs. Also, I would like to comment on one thing: What in the world is up with the "Alex Hyde and his original New-York Jazz"?
I really enjoyed it! It was differnt and even though Gackt and HYDE are not actors, they were really good... The plot line was differnt and very well done..
This is a must see movie for fans of Gackt and Hyde! I watched this movie online once, and saw the preview, and wow! Once you watch it, you have to go and watch it over and over again! This story tells more about the lives of orphans growing up with a bloodsucking vampire, Kei, (Hyde) who cares for them. Sho (Gackt) and Kei soon develope a bond that they can't leave each other's side for eternity because of a close friendship.
While the movie itself was an overall great thign the character development was overall a little odd. The only true change a person could see was in gackt's character Sho. Although there was a slight change in Kei it wasn't really obvious. Other than that it was an amazing movie and a touching ending.
When I first watched this movie I was not aware that Gackt and Hyde had such a huge following, in fact I had never even heard of them. After watching this movie however I followed up and found out that they are both excellent cross over performers. The movie, though somewhat complex and at times hard to follow, is worth the effort. I suggest watching it closely once then going back and rewatching it to catch things you may have missed (as is the case with most movies). Usually when a director tries to throw in so many elements (vampires, gangsters, coming of age, friendship, horror, drama....) the movie falls flat. This is not the case with Moon Child. The director is able to pull together all the elements and produce what I feel is a well executed film. Great images, great performances, and even greater music await you in this film.
