Overview

Writer/director Rodrigo García Nine Lives teams with executive producer Alejandro González Iñárritu to craft this drama highlighting the powerful bond between mothers and daughters. It's been years since Karen Annette Bening gave her daughter, Elizabeth, up for adoption, and the decision to abandon her child has always haunted her. Upon meeting laid-back Paco Jimmy Smits, Karen permits her anxiety and mistrust to get the best of her. On the surface it appears that Elizabeth Naomi Watts is none the worse for never knowing her biological mother; she's a fast-talking lawyer who's just landed a high-profile job at a firm fronted by Paul Samuel L. Jackson, though her unsavory penchant for exploiting others is about to blow up in her face. Meanwhile, maternal-minded baker Lucy Kerry Washington longs to experience the joys of motherhood, eventually deciding that adoption is the best bet to start a family with her husband, Joseph David Ramsey.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide
With Mother and Child, writer-director Rodrigo García again demonstrates his uncommon ability -- uncommon for a man, anyway -- to see the world through a woman's eyes. And again he uses an ensemble narrative structure to examine his familiar themes. Yet Mother and Child delves deeper than his previous work into a specific aspect of the female experience: the relationships between mothers and their offspring, and not necessarily in the ways you might expect. See, the central mother and daughter, played excellently by Annette Bening and Naomi Watts, have never met. As the narrative progresses, it's unclear they ever will. Instead we see how the mutual absence has colored their interactions with the world. García may have great sympathy for his female characters, but that doesn't mean he wants to whitewash them. These particular female characters share a genetic predisposition toward prickliness -- Bening is irrational, acerbic, and short-tempered, Watts is icy and driven and sexually carnivorous. Yet they feel genuine, displaying behavior whose psychological roots don't need to be overtly explicated. A subplot featuring Kerry Washington, playing a prospective mother who can't conceive, also goes into unnervingly honest territory. There's a place here for men, too. One of the film's biggest surprises is a supporting turn by Samuel L. Jackson, playing completely against type as a gentle widower and senior partner at the firm that employs Watts' Elizabeth. Mother and Child wouldn't be from the director of Nine Lives, which featured nine short films shot in a single take, if it didn't contain some fabulous technique. The most memorable involves a single quiet scene with Watts, and a fortuitous biological moment that could only be captured through patience and determination. It's a credit to García that he always marries strong technique with terrific storytelling, and Mother and Child continues that fine tradition.
