Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
Straight from the vaults come five of M-G-M’s most popular and profitable hits of the 1930s, all but one drawn from classic novels. Produced with the polish typically associated with this studio's output, the quintet features a plethora of top players at their personal best. Directed by George Cukor, David Copperfield (1935) is a near-perfect adaptation of the great Dickens yarn, with Freddie Bartholomew (a now-overlooked actor who was among the era's top child stars) in the title role, and a standout cast that includes W. C. Fields (absolutely superb as Mr. Micawber), Lionel Barrymore, Basil Rathbone, Maureen O'Sullivan, Roland Young, and Arthur Treacher. A Tale of Two Cities, another 1935 Dickens adaptation, is a lavishly mounted tale of the French Revolution's Reign of Terror, featuring Ronald Colman in a role that cemented his status as one of the screen’s legendary romantic leads. Pride and Prejudice has been brought to the screen -- officially and unofficially -- more than any other Jane Austen novel, but seldom as effectively as in this 1940 version starring Laurence Olivier as Mr. Darcy and Greer Garson as the oldest and most independent of five husband-hunting sisters in 19th-century England. In his first film venture, author Aldous Huxley adapted Austen’s text for the screen. Completing the set’s literary-pedigree picks is Treasure Island (1934). Director Victor Fleming’s rousing take on the Robert Louis Stevenson classic features spirited performances from Wallace Beery as Long John Silver and Jackie Cooper as Jim Hawkins. The lone non-adaptation here, Marie Antoinette (1938), is a glittering production nonetheless and makes for a fascinating contrast with Sofia Coppola’s 2006 film treatment of the ill- fated French queen’s life. The final film (completed posthumously) of legendary M-G-M production chief Irving Thalberg, and featuring his wife Norma Shearer as Marie Antoinette, the film also includes superb performances from Tyrone Power as the Count Axel von Fersen, Robert Morley as King Louis XVI, and John Barrymore as Louis XV.
