Mr. Ace

Overview

Edward L. Marin's Mr. Ace is one of those odd features that began turning up during the 1940's, as an increasing number of independent producers -- mostly men from outside of Hollywood with disposable income (in this case, Benedict Bogeaus) and a yen to make money in the movies -- began entering the business. It's been kicking around movie lists for years, an offbeat story that plays almost like a Katharine Herpburn/Spencer Tracy vehicle, about political corruption and romance. It was an early Image Entertainment...

Overview

Edward L. It was an early Image Entertainment DVD, from 1999, and the transfer matches the work done on the 1980's era laserdisc; that means it is superior to the laser, lacking the problems inherent in that format's playback. The DVD has a smooth transfer, bringing out the richness of Karl Struss's cinematography. The sound is also mastered at a decent volume level. Image Entertainment put a little extra effort into the programming as well, with 17 chapters marking out the 83 minute movie. The disc opens automatically to a very primitive menu that requires an extra step to start the movie. There are no extras, which makes the original $24.95 list price seem a little steep -- on the other hand, there is so few of George Raft's movies out on DVD, and so few unusual films of this type in the format, that it's almost worth it, for those viewers who enjoy strange 40's romantic dramas.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Craig Butler
Believability is in short supply in Mr. Ace, a behind-the-scenes political picture that makes its title character go through all sorts of uncharacteristic about-faces in order to justify its flimsy plot. If you get the impression that Ace suffers from script problems, you're right on the money. Fred F. Finklehoff's screenplay twists this way and that to come up with new angles, but all that maneuvering only makes George Raft's character seem like so much cardboard. Raft does what he can, bringing his trademark smirk and rough charm to the proceedings, and these go a long way to keeping Ace afloat, but ultimately he's weighed down by too much scripted baggage. As his nemesis-turned-love-interest, Sylvia Sidney does considerably better; her character is not really more dimensional than Raft's but it she is somewhat more consistent, allowing her to develop the character in a sensible manner and to play the drama straight and still find comedic moments. The supporting cast also helps. Edwin L. Marin's direction is only so-so; it keeps the film moving but does little to really enhance it. Still, even a much more inspired director could only go so far with Ace.
