Overview

As is often the case, budget-oriented Goodtimes does a fine job on the picture quality for Mr. Baseball. For the most part the image is balanced and shows off all the detail. There is an inordinate amount of aliasing though, and it can be quite annoying. Fortunately it isn't always evident and doesn't ruin the overall experience of the film. To their credit, they have included the 2.35:1 widescreen of the film. While it doesn't use an anamorphic transfer, it still looks very sharp. The sound, as with most of their releases is a Dolby Digital Surround that centers the dialogue up front. There is little use of any surround material, which may not be a surprise considering the type of film -- comedy-dramas don't often have a fancy sound scheme. Goodtimes titles are usually sparse on extra features, and this disc is just another example in a long line. Other discs from this company at least have a brief "Production Notes" page with some interesting information, but that isn't the case here. As with all discs from this company, the price is low enough that it's difficult to expect too much, and Mr. Baseball isn't the kind of movie that stands out very much, though it does have its moments. Viewers looking for a diversion for a couple of hours, for whom the movie matters more than the extras, can't go wrong with this disc.

This movie is wonderful for those of you who like feel good baseball movies. Jack Elliot (Tom Selleck) is a washed up Yankee who gets sent to Japan to play for who he thinks is a bad manager. However, as the movie goes on, they get to understand each other better.
