Mr. Magoo's Christmas CarolDirector: Abe Levitow
Having made a bundle on their 130-episode package of Mr. Magoo TV cartoons, the folks at UPA studios decided to star Magoo in a 60-minute musical version of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol. First telecast over the NBC network on December 18, 1962, Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol deftly uses the device of depicting Magoo as a famous Broadway star, returning to the stage to essay the role of Ebeneezer Scrooge. This "framing" device has, unfortunately, been eliminated from currently available TV and video versions of this hour-long animated special. Still, Magoo has plenty of time to shine as Scrooge, a role ideally suited for the character's crotchety demeanor and comic nearsightedness. The five original songs by Jules Styne and Bob Merrill are wonderful-far more so than the disposable score of the 1970 live-action Christmas Carol musical adaptation Scrooge. The principal voices are provided by Jim Backus as Magoo, Jack Cassidy as Bob Cratchit, Royal Dano as Marley's Ghost, and Joan Gardner, Morey Amsterdam and Paul Frees. Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol served as the pilot for the 1964 animated anthology series The Famous Adventures of Mr. Magoo, wherein Magoo essayed such literary roles as Friar Tuck, Gunga Din, and all seven of Snow White's dwarves.

When i was a kid I would watch this movie at least 7 times a day during the Christmas season when it was played on local TV. I can still remember the words to most of the songs and had been searching to buy it for about 13 years! I am so glad to be able to share it with my kids now since it is rarely shown on TV ever anymore.
ONE OF THE BEST ALL TIME FAVORITES SINCE I CAN REMEMBER!! MR. MAGOO AND TINY TIM WARMS YOUR HEART AND PUTS ANYONE BACK IN THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT. A HAND FOR EACH HAND STILL BRINGS TEARS TO MY EYES AND I'M 51 YEARS OLD AND STILL WATCHING!!!
This is far and away the finest musical version of Scrooge ever made (and yes there are a few). The songs by Jules Styne are absolutely inspired and memorable. The musical would make a great local theater or high school production. Mr. Magoo's is wonderful!
"Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol" is simply the finest film realization ever, animated or live, of Charles Dickens' wonderful and wondrous tale. Sheer magic, astonishing beauty of song and story, deeply loving, profoundly moving. If you have a heart that has been broken but yet capable of hearing the most exquisite whisperings of that which makes life not just good but even mystical, not just sweet but even sacred, then this film is your film, this story is your story, and its songs sing beauty and comfort to you even in your night of most inward darkness. And the song at the film's center and heart, "Winter Was Warm," sung by a woman with the voice of love itself, is perhaps the greatest song of lost and yearning love ever recorded. A thousand "Bravos" and profoundest gratitude to all who worked to create this magnificent masterpiece of the storyteller's art--this journey from bleakest tragedy to utter exaltation.
One of the very first animated Christmas specials, and one hard to improve upon. The simple animation is brought to life by unforgetable songs you will be singing to yourself each Holiday season to come. The meaningful lessons of life and humanity are clearly taught to one and all. Marvelous for the whole family. Make it a tradition.
I HAVE WATCHED THIS SHOW SINCE I WAS A KID WHICH IS ALMOST 40YRS. BEST CHRISTMAS SHOW EVER. GOOD FOR YOUNG AND OLD ALIKE.
I have watched this since it's beginning. It is one of my all-time favorite Christmas shows. It is very well done and the songs from the show are some of my favorites.
The first of a host of animated Christmas specials, Jim Backus brings to life his age-old character to teach one and all the enduring lessons of this Dickens classic. Although the drawings are dated to those only familiar with the digitally-enhanced workshop offerings, the infectious and spirited musical score will stick with you throughout the year as you find yourself humming and singing virtually all of the numbers. Great fare for the whole family to enjoy each year!
This is simply the best version ever of Dickens' Christmas Carol and is one of the best Christmas treats you can ever give yourself. This is wonderful viewing and the songs... oh, my... the songs - give them a listen. This is why people sing in the first place.
Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol is my favorite animated version of A Christmas Carol. I wouldn't say it was my favorite version of A Christmas Carol because I like The traditional Christmas Carol movies the best but it is my favorite Cartoon version and I like the story and the songs and I highly recommend buying the DVD!
Saw this when it first came out on TV and purchased the VHS as soon as it became available. Finally it appeared on DVD. So many people have never heard of it, yet the songs are as engaging as any I've heard. I recommend this for adults and children of all ages.
Mr. Magoo brings down the house in this very entertaining Christmas musical. We, our 12 year old foster son, and his mother thought it was fantastic! Clean, good, entertaining family fun. We were all surprised at how much we enjoyed it.
