Overview

Many married couples have secrets, but one pair of lovebirds discover they've both been living dangerous secret lives in this action thriller laced with comedy. Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt and play Jane Smith and John Smith, a suburban couple whose marriage has started to go a bit stale after five or six years. Both wish for more excitement in their relationship, but as it happens, each of them is finding plenty of thrills elsewhere. Both Jane and John are world-class assassins who will take on perilous missions for the right price, but neither is aware of the other's secret life - Jane thinks her husband runs a successful construction company, and John believes his wife works on Wall Street. However, when John and Jane are both assigned to take out the same target, one Benjamin Danz Adam Brody, they become aware of each other's secret lives, and suddenly both their careers and their marriage go through some dramatic and potentially deadly changes. Mr. and Mrs. Smith also stars Vince Vaughn as an assassin with John's company who still lives with his mother and Kerry Washington as one of Jane's associates.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
Media coverage of the dissolution of Brad Pitt’s marriage to Jennifer Aniston and his subsequent attachment to Angelina Jolie, his costar in this loud and lively action comedy, unfortunately overshadowed the film itself. Pitt and Jolie portray the titular spouses, both of whom lead secret lives on the side -- unbeknownst to the other -- as assassins for competing interests. Assigned to the same hit, they get in each other’s way and blow the job, leading to a spy-vs.-spy showdown that only exacerbates their growing dissatisfaction with their marriage. Their long-simmering antipathy turns deadly, with a supposedly quiet dinner at home erupting into open warfare. Of course, the joke is on them: Their respective employers want them both dead and are prepared to deploy hit squads to take out the survivor. Director Doug Liman The Bourne Identity is not exactly subtle or restrained in his staging of action scenes, and this film’s armed confrontations are nothing short of cyclonic in their speed and intensity. The chemistry between Pitt and Jolie, however, is palpable, which lends the needed credibility -- and a leavening dollop of insouciance -- to one of the most patently absurd plots committed to celluloid in many a moon. Vince Vaughn adds his trademark wisecracking humor to the characterization of a hit man who lives with his mother, and the effectiveness of his contribution shouldn’t be underestimated. You, too, will be forgiven for wondering what was in the water on this shoot, in light of Vaughn’s subsequent courting of the soon-to-be-erstwhile Mrs. Pitt. But the whole show is watching Pitt and Jolie beat the heck out of each other, so if that’s your idea of a good time -- and we can’t imagine why it wouldn’t be -- this rapid-paced romp ought to be right up your alley.
All Movie Guide - Perry Seibert
Mr. and Mrs. Smith is a first-rate piece of Hollywood blockbuster craftsmanship. Slick in the best sense of the word, the film seems effortless. By underplaying, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie consistently get laughs during the lengthy opening act of the film that establishes their stifling marriage. Director Doug Liman establishes their cold, ornate suburban home without lingering on it, allowing the surroundings to have the same suffocating effect on the viewer that it does on the characters. The film is not exactly deep, but it does offer more depth than most films like it. Liman and company have taken time to make the audience care about the characters, and provided enough thematic subtext about the nature of marriage. Because of this, the flamboyant action sequences have an extra kick. The car chases and shoot-outs generate excitement and laughs without ever sacrificing clarity. The expert editing not only allows the viewer to understand where everybody is and why each person acts the way they do, but also allows the comedic moments to register without slowing down the action. In the skillful hands of Doug Liman, a director who knows how to stage action scenes and comedy with equal aplomb, Mr. and Mrs. Smith offers something more than just another piece of Hollywood product without sacrificing any of the fun.

    Funny, Sexy and Adventurous!

This movie encompasses both romance and action as two assassins attempt to eliminate their target. Their target, although they are unaware is each other!

While attempting to shoot, blow-up or punch each other to death, they rediscover what made them fall in love.

This movie is fantastic - it encompasses romance and action, with a bit of comedy thrown in for good measure.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are unforgettable in this action-packed romance film!

    love this movie!!

great beginning, the way they started the movie just grabs your attention!! you wouldn't want to miss one second of the whole movie! the actors were great~ the story was great~ a bunch of great action scenes and love scenes. the movie is also funny~ but it make sense, not like those kind of movies that you just find yourself laughing at stupid stuff. the story just makes you so excited, you find yourself sweating inside just waiting to see what's going to happen next! after watching this movie with my friend we just wont stop talking about how great that movie was! and we kept saying the lines to each other. it's just a great movie.

    Hated it

I thought the movie was just plain boring and stupid. Yes, Brad and Angelina are hot and a delight to look at but the movie just didn't make any sense.

    Nice action flick

Very much enjoyed this movie of 2 contract killers being married to each other with the other not knowing it. Makes you wonder just what your own spouse is really up to during the workday. :)

    Definitely worth a watch!

This movie was highly entertaining. If this movie does border on a four star then Angelina Jolie put it back up. She is fun to watch and of course hot in this movie.

    Awesome

This movie is excellent! Plenty of action, plenty of comedy. Brad Pitt is hilarious, Vince Vaughn is a delight, and Angelina Jolie kicks plenty of butt.

    FANTASTIC!!!

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVED this movie and can't wait for the DVD to come out. It was funny, action packed and edgy and I nearly sat on the floor because the Theater was so packed (people came more out of curiousity to see the chemistry between Pitt and Jolie) but what they got was a VERY good romp!!

Awesome! Can't get any better than this!!

This is one of the best movies I've seen this year. These two are perfect together. The chemistry between Brad and Angelina explains everything. The movie has action, humor, drama, sex appeal, and terrific storyline that will hold you to the screen the entire time. You'll want to watch it over and over again, just as I have. I can never get enough of this movie. No two actors could have been chosen who could do a better job than Brad and Angelina. The perfect couple in every way. You will love them both and this movie. Do not let your chance go by without seeing this you'll be glad you did. If it could get 10 stars, I would definitely give it 10 stars!! Highly recommended! Outstanding! Never a dull moment. They complement each other's acting capabilities. This DVD is definitely a keeper!!!
