Overview

HBO Home Video's two-disc collection of Mr. Show's first and second seasons is going to please the alternative comedy duo's fans and probably win them loads of new fans in the process. Monkeys who refuse to blow up the moon, TV cop show star Ronnie Dobb's continuing drunken exploits, and Pit-Pat, the Pansexual Spokescreature are just a few of the bizarre characters David Cross and Bob Odenkirk exploit here. The package is concise and intelligent. Disc one compiles all four episodes of season one and disc two collects all six episodes of season two. Image quality is excellent, and the Dolby Surround sound is clean and bold. The supplemental material is as hilarious as the episodes themselves. Ten short, absurd promotional commercials set the tone for the series. "Fuzz the Musical" gives a perfect introduction to Cross' Ronnie Dobbs. "Before It Was a TV Show" sees the comic team trying out their material and delivery in front of a live audience. "The Best of Mr. Show" compiles clips introduced by a news team given voice-overs by Cross and Odenkirk. The full ten-episode commentary isn't as funny as one would expect, as Cross and Odenkirk go back and forth between comedy and droll "you had to be there" background information. It's nearly sleep-inducing at times, but absolute die-hard fans won't complain. Having the episodes themselves in complete form makes this a pleasure-packed collection.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble
Trying to describe HBO’s cult fave Mr. Show to the uninitiated is a bit like trying to explain gravity -- it won’t hit home until you experience it yourself. The collaboration of stars/creators David Cross (Newsradio, The Drew Carey Show) and Bob Odenkirk (The Larry Sanders Show) is an immersion course in helter-skelter sketch comedy, running the gamut from gangsta rap wars and ventriloquists to KKK ads and Tofutti. Indebted to the antics of Monty Python’s Flying Circus, Cross and Odenkirk honed their comedic craft over four seasons at HBO, earning wheelbarrows full of critical acclaim for their work. This handsome two-disc set compiles the groundbreaking first two seasons of Mr. Show, complete with episode commentary and appropriately bizarre extra features such as the Fantastical News Report and "Fuzz: The Musical."
  • Season 1, Show 1 -- "The Cry of a Hungry Baby" Sketches include: "Hitler Sings," "Change for a Dollar," and "Incubation Pants."
  • Season 1, Show 2 -- "What to Think" Senator Tankerbell investigates lewd exhibits at the folk festival, and the story of the thirteenth Apostle is finally revealed.
  • Season 1, Show 3 -- "We Regret to Inform You" The Supermodels Hotline is up and running, and a friend comes along on the honeymoon.
  • Season 1, Show 4 -- "Who Let You In?" Imminent Death Syndrome, the trial of the millennium, and the man who loves popes.
  • Season 2, Show 1 - "Now, Who Wants Ice Cream?" The strange tale of Pat, Nancy, and their friend from across the ocean, and indisputable proof that British people can fly.
  • Season 2, Show 2 -- "A Talking Junkie?!" David searches high and low for a personality, and the Homage Awards, honoring excellence in "borrowing" black culture.
  • Season 2, Show 3 -- "The Biggest Failure in Broadway History" A new ad for the Ku Klux Klan, drunk COPS, and the inimitable Hippie Pie.
  • Season 2, Show 4 -- "If You're Going to Write a Comedy Scene, You're Going to Have Some Rat Feces in There" Scenes from a child-labor writer's room, a tofutti break, and the daily newsreel from Bhopal.
  • Season 2, Show 5 -- "Operation Hell on Earth" Television’s Blame-A-Thon, news family anchors, and fabulous Fartin' Gary.
  • Season 2, Show 6 -- "The Velveteen Touch of a Dandy Fop" "Coupon: The Movie," Megaphone Madness, and the good deeds of Bob and David.

    very smart and funny!!

I did not know about Mr. show until recently. I can't believe I did not hear about it when it was on HBO, The sketches or skits or whatever you want to call them are very clever and extremely funny. Like Marshall the 13th Apostle or the obsessive band guy haunted by mediocrity or Pitpat or my favorite Ronnie Dobbs. David Cross is some kind of Genius maybe...I'm not sure, one thing I am sure of is that he is very funny.

    Brilliantly Funny Show!

This show is by far the best sketch show to ever come out in the U.S., Bob, David and the rest are just superb comdic preformers. All the sketchs in the first & second seasons are great; Ronnie Dobbs, Jeppers Creepers, Coupon: the Movie and many others. Simply a must buy for sketch comedy fans.

    Christian Approved!!!

This DVD is great for young Christians. It has been endorsed publicly by Billy Graham ''The Holy Sky Marshall of Your Mind'' and by ''The Crucifix Quartet'' featuring St.Gary. This collection is a veritable modern day Bible ( but without all the raping and murdering ). Take your copy to church and make Gawd rock!

    High-lariously Funny

If you're in your late 20's to early 30's, overweight, balding, lazy, and have nicknames for your smoking paraphenalia, then this is for you! Are you a complicated genius who just can't get off the couch? If you answered in the affirmative, order today.
