MTV Unplugged: Bob Dylan

Overview

From a musical standpoint, one might puzzle over the irony that while going electric led to the most fruitful creative period in Bob Dylan's career, plenty of fans welcomed his appearance on MTV's Unplugged as a glorious return to form, as if the man was still being asked to live down the 1965 Newport Folk Festival.

But it's also true that Dylan and his band delivered a tight and enthusiastic performance for the MTV cameras, and this DVD release of the show certainly treats the material with the respect it deserves. MTV Unplugged: Bob Dylan has been transferred to disc in the full-frame aspect ratio of 1.33:1 as it was originally broadcast, and the image looks rich and well-detailed, and certainly better than the original VHS release. The audio has been presented in two mixes -- a sharp and lively two-channel mix in uncompressed PCM stereo and a roomy surround-sound version in Dolby Digital 5.1. No additional bonus features have been included, but four additional songs have been added to the set list that were trimmed from the MTV broadcast, expanding the show to 73 minutes. This is a quality release that certainly merits a look from Dylan fans.
