Overview

Singer/songwriter Lauryn Hill goes for the gold in the live concert Lauryn Hill: MTV Unplugged No. 2.0. Presented in 1.33:1 full frame, this is a very pleasant-looking image that sports vivid colors and dark black levels. Shot live on-stage, the transfer has a very rough and real feel to it that should please most Hill fans. The soundtrack is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround in English. This is a very full and lively soundtrack that utilizes all of the speakers during each of the 13 songs featured on this disc. The dialogue and music are all free of any excessive hiss or distortion. Also included on this disc is a subpar PCM Stereo soundtrack in English. The extra features on this disc are in the resounding negative -- not one single supplement is included on this disc (unless you count a song chapter list as a feature).

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Jeffrey Iorio
"This is the first time you’re meeting me," explains Lauryn Hill during her MTV Unplugged session. "Don’t think you met me before." That notion -- that we’re witnessing a performer's rebirth -- is as central to this project as it was to The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, the multi-Grammy-Award-winning solo album in which Hill first laid bare her soul. Fusing a poetry-slam vibe with acoustic guitar accompaniment, Hill is emotionally raw and unbound, using the unplugged format to full effect. With meditations on topics ranging from spiritual redemption to the ills of the music business, she huskily delivers a message fans may not be ready for: It’s time for Lauryn to be herself. Precisely what this entails is unclear -- a further departure from her days with the Fugees is obvious, but a more stripped-down version of the singer is hard to imagine. There are moments, during the bossa nova-flavored "Just Want You Around," for instance, where she flashes the soaring, textured tones we remember from Killing Me Softly. More than anything, though, this is a new Lauryn Hill, an artist singing her way through an evolution instead of pausing to reflect on how much she's grown.

Through it all, this tender renegade purposefully does what she's gotta do to keep her music sacred. The results are sometimes messy, but more often they're miraculous.
