Overview

They take a trip to Hollywood, riding in or on a wide variety of vehicles along the way. They begin their journey on a bicycle pedalled by Kermit, but friends accumulate along the way, and they change vehicles to accomodate them. They have the additional challenge of fending off the entreaties of the heartless Doc Hopper Charles Durning, who wants Kermit to make some advertisements promoting fried frog legs. Kermit must also cope with his amorous feelings for Miss Piggy, and hers for him. This appealing children's adventure movie has numerous scenes which do homage to classic films, and features a huge cast of Hollywood greats, from Edgar Bergen to Orson Welles, in cameo roles. A great box-office success, this movie paved the way for a number of sequels. One of the film's many songs, "The Rainbow Connection," was nominated for an Oscar.

The first, and best, Muppet feature film is a swamp-to-Tinseltown saga in which Kermit the Frog embarks on an odyssey to become “rich and famous” in Hollywood. Along for this wild and wonderful ride are the classic Muppet characters we know and love: aspiring comedian Fozzie Bear, county-fair beauty queen Miss Piggy, and Gonzo, whose own star-crossed dream is to go to Bombay, India, to become a movie star. “You don’t go to Bombay to become a movie star,” he is informed. “You go to Hollywood.” “Sure,” Gonzo replies, “if you want to do it the easy way.” Blocking their path is Doc Hopper (Charles Durning), who will stop at nothing to make Kermit the amphibian face of his frog-leg restaurant chain. Nearly three decades have neither dulled nor dimmed The Muppet Movie’s pleasures. The vaudeville ethos at the heart of The Muppet Show beats strongly here, with jokes both clever and corny, and a ratifying, inclusive spirit that allows Kermit and his company of misfits their place in the world. The puppetry, too, is amazing. You will believe that a frog can ride a bicycle. The stellar and staggering roster of cameos is a show business who’s who, although younger viewers will be more inclined to ask, "Who’s that?" Among the highlights are Jim Henson’s muse, Edgar Bergen, in his final film appearance, plus Bob Hope, Richard Pryor, Steve Martin (as a very sarcastic waiter), Mel Brooks, Orson Welles, and Big Bird, who announces, “I’m on my way to New York City to break into public television.” Paul Williams’s jaunty and dreamy score includes the Oscar-nominated “Rainbow Connection.” The Muppet Movie is all about following one’s dream and the importance of friendship. Mainly, though, it’s about fun, right down to Animal’s final post-credits command to “Go home!”

When The Muppet Movie was released in 1979, there was some doubt that Jim Henson's beloved puppets could successfully cross over from TV to feature films. The fears were assuaged as children and their parents lined up to see the off-the-wall Muppet humor and energy on the big screen. The film was such a hit that TV's The Muppet Show quickly went off the air and a sequel, The Great Muppet Caper, was released in 1981. Similar to the series, which featured a different celebrity every week, the movie parades a series of big-name cameos: Orson Welles, Richard Pryor, Bob Hope, and James Coburn, to name a few. Also like the TV show, the Muppets crew proves itself adept at staging -- and simultaneously parodying -- musical numbers. Henson voiced and operated five of the characters, but journeyman director James Frawley helmed the film. The Muppet Movie would be nominated for Academy Awards for best score and best song (the memorable "Rainbow Connection").

    Fun for Muppet Fans

    We hadn't seen this movie since it was first released years ago, but when we saw it on DVD, we thought our daughter (17 months old), might enjoy it. As it turns out, it is the first movie she has sat all the way through, and she hasn't done that for a Disney movie yet. I think she finds the Muppets entertaining, as do her mom and dad. The story is fun (aside from the frog legs salesman that is constantly going after Kermit), and there are a lot of fun cameo appearances.

    My Son Loved this Movie and Now His Daughter Loves It

    We had a great time watching this movie. It is fun and the characters are wonderful. My granddaughter sat still the whole movie and has watched it 4 or 5 times since the first time we played it for her. Great family fun.

    MUPPETS RULE!

    i luv the muppets!!!!!!!! and this movie is sooooo good. it's cute, funny and great for anyone, of any age. I also think that jim henson is really cool and i luv all of his work.
