Overview

Season 3 of Murder, She Wrote finds peppery mystery novelist Jessica Fletcher (Angela Lansbury) periodically leaving the comfort of her hometown of Cabot Cove for business-and-pleasure jaunts in such locales as Washington, D.C., New York City, and California. No matter where she goes, however, murder is sure to follow -- and, of course, Jessica will be able to apply her acute skills as an amateur detective to solve the case. The season opens with the two-part "Death Stalks the Big Top," in which such notable actors as Jackie Cooper and Martin Balsam figure into the intrigue. In later episodes, the guest-star roster includes Pat Hingle, Susan Anton, David Hemmings, Adrienne Barbeau, and future ER leading man George Clooney. Episodes worthy of special notice include "Murder in a Minor Key," wherein for the first time Jessica Fletcher does not appear as the main character, but instead "narrates" an adventure from her latest novel; the two-part "Magnum on Ice," in which Tom Selleck recreates his famous TV role as Hawaii-based detective Thomas Magnum; and "The Days Dwindle Down," a mystery built around black-and-white footage from the 1949 B-picture Strange Bargain, and featuring three of that film's leading players, Jeffrey Lynn, Martha Scott, and Harry Morgan.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
Mystery writer Jessica Fletcher (Angela Lansbury) continues her career as an amateur detective in the 22 episodes of the 1986-87 season, which maintains the high level of quality established in previous years. The writing remains excellent, although uncredited borrowings from classic mystery novels become more frequent this season. The Murder, She Wrote tradition of stuffing every episode with guest stars recognizable from old TV shows and vintage movies is adhered to, with a plethora of top actors appearing in the season-opening two-parter, "Death Stalks the Big Top." Jackie Cooper appears as Jessica's brother Neil, and Courteney Cox (long before she found Friends over at NBC) plays his granddaughter Carol. Other guests that flit in and out of this novel episode include Greg Evigan, Florence Henderson, Martin Balsam, Alex Cord, Laraine Day, Ronny Cox, and Charles Napier. The next episode, "Unfinished Business," reintroduces recurring characters Seth Hazlitt (William Windom) and Sheriff Amos Tupper (Tom Bosley). A young George Clooney pops up in "No Laughing Matter," which finds Jessica investigating a murder at the reunion of two estranged stand-up comics. A clever bit of "stunt casting" has Tom Selleck playing his popular private eye in "Magnum on Ice." One of the season's best episodes is "The Days Dwindle Down," an intricately plotted story inspired by the classic whodunits of Ellery Queen, with Jessica linking a present-day murder to a killing that took place 30 years previously.

Murder, She Wrote - Season 3 5 out of 5 based on 0 ratings. 4 reviews.

Repeated airings of the brilliant "Murder, She Wrote" on the Biography Channel have only made me anticipate these DVDs all the more. Season 3 includes the classic "Magnum P.I." crossover episodes, meaning eye candy is upgraded from Seth Hazlitt (not to underplay the fine doctor's appeal, of course!). A must-have for any fan of mystery television.

I love watching Murder, She Wrote. It is full of suspense, mystery, drama, and adventure (especially when Jessica rides her bike)! The third season is no exception. Jessica is at it again, solving the mysteries before anyone else can. I have both the first and second season and watch the show almost every day!
