Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Glen Sansone
Famed producer George Martin convenes an all-star musical cast in a benefit concert for the people of the small, volcano-ravaged island of Montserrat, which is also home to Martin's recording studio. Held in 1997 at London's Royal Albert Hall -- the location of several Prince's Trust benefits -- the show sees Mark Knopfler, Sting, Eric Clapton, and Elton John turning in characteristically solid performances. The concert also catches one of the last performances of "Blue Suede Shoes" by that late, brilliant rock pioneer Carl Perkins. Paul McCartney's set, an accelerating ride of Beatles euphoria from "Yesterday" into "Golden Slumbers," "Carry That Weight," and "The End," brings wistful longing for the Fab Four reunion that never was. These galas usually end with a rousing final rave-up that brings each star back onstage again, and this one's no exception. The amassed reach first into the Beatles canon for "Hey Jude" and follow it with the blues classic "Kansas City," giving the benefit both a killer send-off that and a hint of what rock 'n' roll heaven will sound like.
