Overview

Miramax has released a DVD presentation for Music of the Heart (1.85:1 widescreen with Dolby Surround Sound) that equally satisfies the music and movie lover. This feel-good, true-life tale of a violin teacher bringing music, discipline, and inspiration to East Harlem schoolchildren comes with the full-length documentary Small Wonders on which the movie is based. Director Wes Craven, better known for his horror flicks, supplies a refreshingly unegotistical and thoughtful commentary, mixing technical notes, behind-the-scenes anecdotes, and small reflections, such as how shooting on location gives a film an overall different feel. The "Deleted Scenes" section can be viewed with or without Craven's commentary, underscoring his remark on filmmaking, "A lot of it has to do with the choice of what to leave out, even though something might be good on its own." For the musically inclined, there's a peek into the scoring session and the filming of the Carnegie Hall concert, as well as biographies of the professional violinists from the Carnegie concert and interviews about the teachers who helped their musical careers. Collectively, they remind viewers of music's ability to transform a life, as well as the discipline that the musical life requires. Finally, there's the music video of 'N Sync and Gloria Estefan performing the title track, completing a classy package of DVD treats.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Laura Abraham
Wes Craven has brought audiences some wonderfully creepy slasher films throughout the years, including the Nightmare on Elm Street series and the Scream series. Who would have guessed this same man could pull off a sentimental, true-life story of a woman who magically transforms a non-existent music program into one that performs at Carnegie Hall? Without all the trappings of a traditional, sappy Hollywood film, Craven shows us real people fighting for a real, everyday cause: education. Meryl Streep has engaged audiences in her roles in such classic films such as Silkwood and Manhattan, and in this one, she shines just as she always has. Streep brings the perfect blend of sophistication and realness to the role of Roberta. Music may be too sappy for hardcore Wes Craven fans; however, this is a good solid film with a great message.

    wow!!!!

I had the inspiration to see this movie after meeting her son Nick at my school. He is the cellist in the Shanghai String Quartet, and a wonderful person. As a violinist/violist, this movie really hit home. I am a music major and am currently working towards my masters. I know what those children went thru, I've played ALL those pieces and I teach them as well. My heros Itzhak Perlman and Issac Stern were in it as well! A MUST HAVE FOR ALL STRING PLAYERS!!! Go visit www.shanghaiquartet.com!
