Overview

It's Valentine's Day in the tiny mining town of Valentine's Bluff, Nova Scotia, and for the first time in two decades the residents are planning a holiday dance. The long hiatus is due to the tragic events of 20 years earlier, when a pair of mining supervisors were too busy enjoying themselves at the dance to prevent an accident from killing a large contingent of their workers. The lone survivor, Harry Warden, took his revenge the next year by removing the hearts of his bosses and promising similar carnage if ever another Valentine's dance were held. Unfortunately, the town's horny early-'80s youngsters aren't big on tradition, especially since Warden is locked up in an insane asylum. They go ahead with plans to celebrate the holiday -- even after a heart in a candy box shows up and beloved biddy Mabel Patricia Hamilton ends up enduring an involuntary tumble dry. Soon, bodies begin piling up, setting the stage for a climactic trawl through the mines and surprise revelations about the fate of Harry Warden. Shortly after the death of John Lennon, the MPAA made an example of this Canadian slasher film, forcing much of its gore to be excised. Nevertheless, My Bloody Valentine provided inspiration for Kevin Shields' influential band of the same name, which helped establish England's late-'80s shoegazer sound and paved the way for the post-rock of the 1990s.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Brian J. Dillard
My Bloody Valentine stands out from the glut of holiday-themed 1980s slasher films by virtue of its mine-shaft locale and inventive murder scenes. Despite heavy MPAA cuts, slayings involving laundromats, nail guns, hot dogs, steam rooms, pickaxes, and, of course, valentines enliven a fairly standard-issue scenario. The cavernous mine sets provide a compellingly claustrophobic locale for the mayhem, while the cast of mostly Canadian unknowns goes dutifully through its paces, even pausing once in a while to emote. If anything, the script is a bit too heavy on the plot, the prodigious back story taking up too much time better spent racking up corpses. By the time the mine literally comes apart at the seams and the ranks of dim-witted miners and their girlfriends have been thinned, My Bloody Valentine may have outworn its welcome. But for genre aficionados, the film offers just the right mix of novelty and familiarity.

    I Also Recommend:

New DVD may contain long lost gore scenes!

This new DVD may be worth buying because of the above mentioned reasons. While at this point it seems unlikely that Lionsgate (taking over DVD distribution rights from Paramount) will do a full scale restoration of the pre MPAA butcherd version of My Bloody Valentine, it would be nice to see the cut scenes, even if it is as a supplementary feature. And I am sure that if the new DVD contains these scenes (in any sembelance of quality) some hardcore fan will take it upon themselves to reconstruct the original version and post thier results online. So either way, if the new DVD has these scenes it will be a cause for rejoicing among slasher fans.

    My Bloody Valentine

Fans of 80s slasher flicks are sure to like this one. The plot is simple like most movies of this type. But I must warn you the kill scenes are heavily cut. Apprently this movie was quite gory, but thanks to the MPAA most of those scenes were left on the cutting room floor and Paramount will not give us the unrated DVD. But this is still a must see for slasher movie fans. The 80s were the best times for these type of flicks. While My Bloody Valentine doesn't hold up as well on multiple viewings slasher fans really need to seek this one out.
