Overview

Leo McCarey was supposed to both produce and direct My Favorite Wife, but an illness forced him to relinquish the director's chair to Garson Kanin, who did a splendid job. This hilarious retread of the old "Enoch Arden" legend stars Irene Dunne as Ellen, who returns home to her husband Nick Cary Grant and children Tim Ann Shoemaker and Chinch Mary Lou Harrington after being marooned on a desert island for seven years. Thing of it is, Ellen has been declared legally dead, and Nick has taken unto himself a second wife, the bitchy Bianca Gail Patrick.

Upon discovering that Ellen is still alive, Nick is on the verge of a tender reunion-until it discovers that she spent those seven lost years in the company of handsome Mr. Barkett Randolph Scott. The superb supporting cast includes Granville Bates as a flummoxed judge, Chester Clute as a meek shoe salesman whom Ellen tries to pass off as Barkett, and Donald MacBride as a beetle-browed honeymoon-hotel clerk. My Favorite Wife was remade in 1963 as Move Over Darling, in which Irene Dunne and Cary Grant were replaced by Doris Day and James Garner. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

    Great!

This is one of my favorite Cary Grant movies and my favorite of the Movies that Cary made with Irene Dunne. They are both wonderful actors and this is a very funny movie with witty dialogue. There is a color remake of this movie from the 1960's called Move Over Darling and starring Doris Day and James Garner and it is a very good, very cute movie but my favorite is this original black and white Grant/Dunne version.

    Very Funny!

This is one of my favourite Cary Grant movies. The plot is based on a poem with the woman marrying a man when her husband has not been found for a long time, but in this movie, the genders are switched but you'll still have a nice time watching this very funny classic starring Irene Dunne and Cary Grant.

Been waiting a LONG time for this!!

I absolutley LOVE this movie!! I have been waiting for years for it to be released again. I grew up (I'm 29) watching Cary Grant movies and is this my all time favorite. He was a brilliant actor, brilliant at the physical comedy. When he sees his first wife (who is pronounced leagally dead after 7 years on his wedding day to wife #2) for the first time the look on his face is priceless!I don't want to give too much away like some reviews do, but let me just say that his antics are hilarious!! There have been several remakes and variations of this movie but nothing beats the original! A true romantic comedy in every sense.
