Overview

Bruce Joel Rubin's tearjerker My Life comes to DVD with a pair of transfers. The widescreen anamorphic transfer preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1, and is preferable in every way to the standard full-frame image. A closed-captioned English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital Surround, while Spanish and French soundtracks are recorded in Dolby Digital Stereo. Subtitles are accessible in all three of those languages. Supplemental materials include theatrical trailers, and information on the cast and crew. This is a solid release from Columbia/TriStar.In My Life, Michael Keaton stars as Bob Jones, who has just been informed that his wife Gail (Nicole Kidman) is pregnant with their first child. However, he has also been told he has kidney cancer that has spread to his lungs; the longest Bob is expected to live is four months, which will deny him the joy of witnessing the birth of his child. Raging within, he visits a Chinese healer, Mr. Ho (Haing S. Ngor), who encourages him to let go of all the anger and fear he has kept trapped inside himself. Bob proceeds to videotape himself, on the advice of Mr. Ho, where Bob will talk to his unborn child and discuss what he has learned in life. In the process of the videotape sessions, Bob discovers that his anger resides in his past with his family, and Bob reveals secrets that he has kept hidden from himself and his wife through the years.

This movie is in fact, most people's lives, and therefore we can all sympathize and even relate to the character Bob Jones. This is not a sappy movie where the protagonist is dying and he leaves this legacy behind for all to benefit from because of some unreachable way of living. No, this story is quite the opposite. This is the story of a regular sinner whom people don't think very highly of and who also finds that he holds petty grudges against his family (told you this was everyone's story). While it looks like it might get preachy, it does not. This movie does not suggest ways for you to fix up your life in order to be a better person. Instead, it offers you a flashlight and gives you the opportunity to look deep into your heart to see if there's any unresolved issues lingering there. While I don't agree with the practice he chose to cure himself of cancer, I appreciate the deeper message that Bob must let go of his hatred if he doesn't want to die from that as well. While this film offers a generous amounts of laughs, I would be hard-pressed to meet a like-viewer of this film who did not at least come close to crying. Potential viewer, the tears will come. But don't let that stop you from allowing yourself the experince of My Life. Your heart will nearly break, but redemption shines at the peak of every great movie, and this is indeed a great movie.
