Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Patricia Kim O'Cone
Suffused with the innocent wistfulness of childhood, My Neighbor Totoro 1988 is a delightful anime film that finds magic in everyday occurrences -- dust bunnies morph into frightening creatures, and the sound of rain on an umbrella becomes a joyous symphony. Master anime director Hayao Miyazaki spins the story of young Mei and Satsuki Kusakabe, two sisters who move with their family to a rural community in order to help their mother recuperate from an illness. After Mei discovers a large, smiling, roly-poly creature called Totoro in the nearby forest, the sisters explore a new world of imagination and adventure. Totoro shows them how dancing at night helps the trees grow, and how wind is created by spinning on treetops. A whimsical tale rich with joy and human kindness, My Neighbor Totoro reminds audiences that human beings are intrinsically connected with nature. In fact, Totoro has since inspired a group of environmentalists to preserve the rural lands of Tokorozawa, which serve not only as the movie's setting, but also as Miyazaki's home. The coexistence of humanity and the environment is a common theme for the director, who explores it further in the more adult-minded Princess Mononoke.
All Movie Guide - Andrea LeVasseur
In the world of Hayao Miyazaki, the curiosity of two sisters drives the narrative for a story that seems created purely for the sake of whimsical pleasure. There are no villains, and the family actually cares for each other. What's more, the imagination of little girls in the natural and spiritual world is encouraged and celebrated. While unheard of in an American animated adventure, all these elements create a joyous family film that is lighthearted fun for children, yet full of enough nuance to please an adult audience. With Miyazaki's hand-drawn style of sweeping backgrounds and fuzzy creatures, the simple exploration of a backyard is transformed into a magical journey. Unlike typical Disney films, the children's antics never seem contrived or fall into a battle-against-adults storyline. My Neighbor Totoro embraces the creativity inherent in a little girl's play time, while honoring it with the subtle details of a dramatic work. The features of Totoro and the Cat Bus are rendered lovingly, and the family is portrayed as a positive and comforting presence. However, My Neighbor Totoro is not a sugar-coated fantasy; some scenes portray the very real-life fears of being alone at night at a bus stop and being separated from an ill loved one. There are also some humorous bits that reveal a careful observation of children, as well as some genuinely inspiring moments in keeping with the ecological themes Miyazaki frequently returns to. This film does not suffer from a lack of conflict; it succeeds as an adventure fueled by the innocence and wonder of a little girl.

    New voices are terrible. Seek out original movie.

    My Neighbor Totoro is the best children's movie I have ever seen. It is brilliant, refreshing and wildly creative with strong female characters. Unlike most American children's movies, there is no violence. That being said, the original movie is far better than the newly released Disney version in which Disney redubs the film and changes many of the lines that the characters say. Comparing the original to the new one, it is inconceivable (and arrogant) why they changed a thing since there was nothing wrong with the film to begin with. Now, we're left to suffer with Disney's terrible "improvements" and are left to search for the old version and make bootleg copies of it to distribute to our friends so they too can enjoy the best children's movie ever the way it was intended to be seen by American audiences.

    Disney=Improvements?

    My Neighbor Totoro is most certainly an excellent movie, but only if you look past the fact that Disney slaughtered the movie because of the new voice acting.Having grown up on this movie I was shocked to see the DVD version.My advice is that you should seek out the original VHS version by FOX.

    A reviewer

    Although I haven't seen the entire film, of the clips I have seen were disappointing regarding the dubbing. Unlike Spirited Away, where the dubbing worked, the charm is lost in this one. Why can't they provide the full original version with captions? Are we all really too lazy to read the subtitles?

    Uh ... This is an excellent cartoon movie for children

    Children are children, very pure in their behavior- they react as they feel and they do this instantly. I literally liked this movie and it made be remember my childhood days which I spent in the Doon valley in India. In this movie only some childern who can see spirited beings of a mystical forest. Their love for fun, exploration, their parents ... everything is fantastically portrayed ...

    Fantasy Fiction Fun.

    From acclaimed director Hayao Miyazaki "My Neighbor Totoro" with key characters Satsuki and Mei is a delightful fantasy. This is great family entertainment. The storyline is engaging and the characters are endearing, along with magical music. Creatures that only the "young-at-heart" and young in age can see are assisting to make a difficult situation easier to deal with. Some of the creatures may make you think of giant huggable hamsters. *Great detail in the animation makes this DVD a wonderful choice for family movie time.

    Love My Neighbor Totoro

    Totoro represents the deep magic that all children knows is in the world. As two girls deal with a new life as they are moved to the country, their mother in long-term care at the hospital, and new school - they also discover community. Their community is more than the local farmers ( who seem strange at first.) There are magical creatures who seem to lift the girls' spirits when they are at their lowest. Totoro is magical, sweet and charming. My children have loved Totoro at 2, at 10 and at 16. There is something to discover in each viewing! We even love the music. The voices have been recently re-done with Dakota Fanning and it is even better translated than before. I hope your family enjoys this film as much as we did.

    Our Favorite Family Movie

    My Neighbor Totoro is one of my favorite movies, of any genre, of all time. Myself, my husband,and my two oldest kids (the youngest is still an infant), watch it every coupe of Months.It is a true kids' movie - meaning for kids, or the young kid still in all of us. It does not talk down to kids. It shows the world as we all have seen it, from a four or five year old point of view; where nature and fantasy and our family and strangers all blend together. Things are mysterious and make perfect sense in a magical / logical way. The creatures are big and toothy and powerful, but not scary. There are no big scary scenes or characters to inspire awe, just incredible landscapes and wonderous creatures. The sounds are one of my favorite parts; bugs chirping in the heat of mid day, flutes being played atop a huge tree, a frog in the road. Miyazaki lingers on these sounds and also on moments in nature, like leaves in a stream and rain drops on roofs. A great movie to watch when you want to feel like a five year old with bare feet and the ability to see magical creatures. The story is touching and the characters very real.

    Great Movie, Terrible Cast

    I have enjoyed this movie since I was very young, but was disappointed to find that Disney decided to re-dub the movie with such famous stars as Dakota Fanning, who proves to be an extremely annoying voice to tolerate for an entire feature length film. I think I was even more disappointed when I bought this product, which clearly lists the original dub cast on this very page, and received the newest dub.

    disney=dissapointing

    i love Totoro. however, the dvd with the new voices now that disney owns the rights to Totoro dissapointed me. Even though many of the word changes in the movie weren't a big deal, it seemed somewhat Americanized to call the soot sprites " soot gremlins". i would give the Totoro on the vhs tape as many stars as possible. don't buy this. buy the cassette tape.

    Skip Disney version, find original Fox version

    The Fox 1993 English dubbed version of this film is one of my most cherished family films of all time. Disney has monkey-ed with it's perfection and I do not endorse that version. Even the theme song is now "yelled" rather than sung.

    classic

    i remember when this movie was on video at the blockbuster down the street. i think my sister and i were the only ones who ever got to watch it because we rented it EVERY week. After about a year the tape started skipping because we watched it so much. we were both in love with this movie and ever since, anytime we saw the tape at a video store, we rented it. and the quality was always awful with snow and sometimes the tapes didn't even work. im seventeen now and seeing this out on dvd just made my day. im going to purchase it right now...

    I'd Give It 9,999 Stars If I Could

    This is one movie that always cuts the cake. I saw it a week ago. I'm eleven, and I thought it would be for a younger audience than me. I couldn't be more wrong. I was extremely surprised by the enormous amount of feeling this movie gave to me. While Princess Mononoke may definitely be better on a grand scale, nothing brought me more into the story than this. I just wanted to die when the commercials wouldn't end as I saw this on Cartoon Network's spring break 2006 for the first time. I loved it. I am definitely going to buy it. And, while Spirited Away is certainly a good movie, I found out that it wasn't all that great. After the 3rd time of seeing it, I don't really see the magic in it. It definitely is not as powerful as Princess Mononoke or as cute and cuddly as this. Although the cuddliness is huge, I still think this is one rock hard movie. I give it 10 out of 5 stars.

    Disney does it again, but thanks anyway!

    Wow,where to start on this one? Okay, well of course we're all really grateful to the Mouse Machine for giving us the improved production (wide screen and dual language) of a film so many of us love to the very core of our being and we'll definitely buy a copy or two, but then we watch their new dub and realize they still don't quite get it. Even with Miyazaki's tight contractual stipulations we can still wind up with bad english voice cast and skewed americanization of the script. Note to Mouse: It's a Miyazaki film. You don't need a recognizable "Hollywood name" in the cast to sell it. And just because someone is a talented SCREEN actor doesn't necessarily make him or her a good VOICE actor (match the mouth flaps anyone?). Track down a copy of the original Fox english release and watch how much better it was with a cast that was more vocally and energetically matched to the Japanese language version. And while you're watching, pay attention to the dialog. Notice how the Fox script more closely matches the Japanese translation? Regardless, this is a GREAT movie for ALL ages. It is charming beyond measure and infinitely re-watchable. It's a wonderful gift movie for the toddler thru grade-school age group - adorable characters, realistic children, beautiful animation and a sweet story. Parental cautionary note: the story does involve a hospitalized parent (the mother). Though she does get better and come home (as seen in the ending credits) this might be a difficult theme for a child in this situation or one who has actually lost a parent.

    Greatest Movie of All Time

    I first saw this movie when I was three, and I loved it right from the start. I am now seventeen, and I can still watch the movie and love every part of it. I've grown up with this movie, and it holds such a beautiful timeless story that I'll always enjoy. I highly recommend this movie for all to see.

    Buy the VHS?

    The movie is fabulous, probably my favorite movie ever, however, having no options for language means you can't watch in Japanese with English subtitles. The English voice acting and the rough translation on very powerful expressions deteriorates the value of the piece. I would, in this case, recommend the VHS.

    One of the most greatest movies I've ever seen.

    When i oringinally saw this movie i was very young. We had rented the movie and i watched it with my older sister. I came to start acting like Mei, and always treated my sister with the same manner as Mei would to Satsuki. I was probibly around the same age as Mei at that time, and my sister was around the age of Satsuki. After that i forgot about this movie, since i had to grow up. But two years ago i saw it on the shelf at blockbuster and immidately picked it up and rented it. It has been on my Christmas list ever since. I love it.
