This superbly animated children's tale is directed by Hayao Miyazaki, one of Japan's most beloved animators. The story follows Satsuke and Mei, two young girls who find that their new country home is in a mystical forest inhabited by a menagerie of mystical creatures called Totoros. They befriend O Totoro, the biggest and eldest Totoro, who is also the king of the forest. As their girls' mother lies sick in the hospital, O Totoro brings the sisters on a magical adventure but also helps them to understand the realities of life. Like most films released by Miyazaki's Studio Ghibli, this family-oriented feature has a powerful ecological theme. The English-language version of this film wasn't dubbed until many years later, explaining the presence of actors such as Dakota Fanning in the cast (who wasn't even born until 1994).

My Neighbor Totoro is the best children's movie I have ever seen. It is brilliant, refreshing and wildly creative with strong female characters. Unlike most American children's movies, there is no violence. That being said, the original movie is far better than the newly released Disney version in which Disney redubs the film and changes many of the lines that the characters say. Comparing the original to the new one, it is inconceivable (and arrogant) why they changed a thing since there was nothing wrong with the film to begin with. Now, we're left to suffer with Disney's terrible "improvements" and are left to search for the old version and make bootleg copies of it to distribute to our friends so they too can enjoy the best children's movie ever the way it was intended to be seen by American audiences.
My Neighbor Totoro is most certainly an excellent movie, but only if you look past the fact that Disney slaughtered the movie because of the new voice acting.Having grown up on this movie I was shocked to see the DVD version. My advice is that you should seek out the original VHS version by FOX.
Although I haven't seen the entire film, of the clips I have seen were disappointing regarding the dubbing. Unlike Spirited Away, where the dubbing worked, the charm is lost in this one. Why can't they provide the full original version with captions? Are we all really too lazy to read the subtitles?
I used to watch this every day when I was a small girl! then i saw it here and completely freaked out! It's an adorable show that everyone will love!
This is by far the worst movie i have ever seen. The original movie was a hundred times better than this crap. They ruined the voices and songs for this movie. I don't get why they had to change the voices. Disney you've screwed up a very good movie. Lets see how many more you screw up. If I could i'd rate this with no stars so sadly i have to put at least one 1 which you don't even deserve.
i love this movie is is the best ever i love it so much i recommend this movie to alot of people
From acclaimed director Hayao Miyazaki "My Neighbor Totoro" with key characters Satsuki and Mei is a delightful fantasy. This is great family entertainment. The storyline is engaging and the characters are endearing, along with magical music. Creatures that only the "young-at-heart" and young in age can see are assisting to make a difficult situation easier to deal with. Some of the creatures may make you think of giant huggable hamsters. *Great detail in the animation makes this DVD a wonderful choice for family movie time.
This movie should be in everyone's home library, if you have kids in the house or you're just a kid at heart. It is by far my favorite anime movie.
This is a fabulous film for the whole family. We can't get enough of it in our house. There is magic, adventure, and emotion in this film, shown in a way that is accessible to kids. Buy it!
I received this film over 5 years ago from my grandmother. The first time I watched it I was amazed by the storyline and the music. I watched it several times after that. I also liked the chinese animation. My favorite part is when there is a cat but it is also a train. It runs and does basic stuff that a cat would do, yet is a train. It's the best movie ever!
There is NO excuse for having NO widescreen option and NO original Japanese voice track with English subtitles. This is such a colorful cartoon with BIG, beautiful scenery that fills the screen. Pan and scan really takes away from that. Shoddy treatment by FOX; buy the widescreen import instead.
Omg this is so cute, i wish i could reach in to the television give them a big hug and lots of kisses!
To childish and also need more romance.
I love this movie more than any other movie!!! i first saw it when i was like 7 and i still love it!!! and my favorite thing is the cat/bus!! its a bus...but its also a cat!!! ok im EXTREMLY easily amussed so bear with me here ok people? well i loved it and i love anime so um...yea...oh!!! and i just want to reach in and huggle them all!!!!! BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!! huggles and love to all! -Rain
A fabulous film, destroyed by 20th Century Fox by not including the original Japanese language track. A great storyline, which appeares to be taking place in a rural Japan of decades ago, was totally killed by English dialog. It doesn't take any effort to include the original Japanese track on the DVD, and what did Fox accomplish by not having it? Why aren't animated films treated the same as other films? DVD technology allows for a film to easily contain multiple languages (both in audio and subtitles). To not include the language which a film is originally created demonstrates both laziness and thoughtlessness on Fox's part. They are not worthy to distribute foreign films!
my son sent this movie to me from taiwan when it was still only in chinese characters with japanese audio. i of course had no idea what was being said but it was wonderful and easy to follow the story. then in 1988 when we got it in english (and filled in a few gaps in our understanding) it was just sensational. if you have kids, you MUST own this movie. very entertaining for adults as well. definitely a ''feel good'' story. best animated film ever!!!!
I just wanted to say that this isn't a Chinese animation. It is Japanese. Although I am Korean, my family is into Japanese animation and my father got hold of a real authentic Totoro video tape from Japan and I watched it and enjoyed it so much. It is definately a lot better to have the original copy with just the subtitles. And also because the animation is more pure that way.
