Overview

A regular guy finds out just how hard breaking up can truly be when attempting to call it quits with a clingy female crime fighter who doesn't want to let love die in director Ivan Reitman's super-powered romantic comedy. Matt Saunders Luke Wilson was looking for love when he first met pretty brunette Jenny Johnson Uma Thurman, and at the time it seemed as if he may had finally actually found it. Jenny isn't just your typical girl, though, because despite her outwardly normal appearance she is actually a powerful superhero dedicated to ridding the streets of crime. Her outward strength betrays a deep-rooted insecurity, too, and when Jenny begins to become a bit too possessive for Matt's laid-back taste, the troubled boyfriend does his best to end the relationship amicably. They say that breaking up isn't easy to do, however, and when your girlfriend is a superhero, that sentiment holds twice the truth as it does under any normal circumstances. Matt is determined to get on with his life, though, and as his budding romance with beautiful co-worker Hannah Anna Faris begins to get serious, jealous Jenny scornfully slips into G-Girl mode to prove that hell hath no fury like a woman superhero scorned.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
What would it be like to date a female superhero who is insecure, neurotic, possessive, and insanely jealous? This outlandish comedy provides the answer. While fighting crime in Manhattan, buxom, blonde G-Girl (Uma Thurman) cuts a dashing figure in flowing cape, black leather tights, and boots. But as Jenny Johnson, the mousy, bespectacled manager of a trendy art gallery, she’s starved for affection -- which makes her vulnerable to the advances of perennially unlucky-in-love architect Matt Saunders (Luke Wilson). Jenny’s clingy ways eventually drive him into the arms of co-worker Hannah Lewis (Anna Faris), who’s ill prepared for a catfight with a super-powered rival. Simpsons-trained scriptwriter Don Payne works up several hilarious set pieces -- with contributions from a superhero, the couple’s bedroom romp is quite, how to put it, energetic -- although some potentially promising situations aren’t fully fleshed out. Veteran director Ivan Reitman elicits generally slick performances from the cast, although Faris and supporting player Rainn Wilson (best known for his work in The Office) aren’t given enough room to display their sharp comic chops. Though it's not quite the powerhouse its terrific premise promises, one can’t help but like this appealing, if slight, star vehicle for the always-engaging Uma Thurman.

    What was this?

This could've been a great comedy, could have..... I don't know what happened to this movie, but it was dull and dull and just dull.

    A Super Heroine Scorned

This is actually a fun movie. I don't I've ever watched a movie about a neurotic super heroine who has just been dumped. And she returns with a vengeance. I thought the plot idea was pretty original and funny. It combined a realistic situation with a fantasy world, which reminds me of the movie Hancock. Usually super hero movies are heavy and dark with a dreary outlook. Super Ex is funny, quirky, lightly sexy. I like the unique approach to the story. Luke Wilson, Rainn Wilson, Anna Faris and Uma Thurman, Wanda Sykes and Eddie Izzard all worked pretty well in their roles. Especially Uma Thurman as the mousy sexy but dominante Jenny Johnson/G-Girl.

    What a flop!

The idea behind this movie was great. The movie however was nothing short of a disappointment. It explains why it didn't do so well on the big screen. There were a couple of funny lines, funny scenes but I literally fell asleep towards the end. I still have NO clue how it ended and really don't care. That's what an "impression" this movie made on me. Maybe they picked the wrong people to star in this movie. I have a hard time seeing Urma in anything funny (or really anything for that matter) and don't think Luke Owens is that funny either. Disappointing. Could have been worse, I could have dished out the cash to see this flop on the big screen.
