All Movie Guide
The Australian film My Year Without Sex is a ribald comedy about the hilarious misadventures of a single man fighting a losing battle against the opposite sex. Or at least that's what you'd think from the title, right? Try again. The movie does involve a man (played by Matt Day) and his year-long period of forced abstinence, but the reasons for the abstinence are considerably more sober than the title suggests: His wife (Sacha Horler) has just collapsed from a brain aneurysm, and any strenuous physical activity could cause it to rupture again. A laugh a minute, right? Viewed through the filter of an Australian's sense of humor, My Year Without Sex could technically qualify as a black comedy, but it's far more melancholy than it is humorous. This doesn't mean writer-director Sarah Watt has made a bad film -- just a misleading one, sometimes misleading within the structure of the film itself. For example, she divides the film into twelve chapters representing the twelve months, introducing each with a whimsical graphic and a short, racy title. However, at its core, her film is a pensive look at regular life overshadowed by infirmity, at how the stricken Natalie continues or fails to continue her daily responsibilities as a wife and mother, and how her husband copes with the tug-of-war between his role as a supportive partner and his biological need for gratification. But even this last desire only presents itself in the form of a few chaste glances at skin magazines and an extramarital temptation at work, while for Natalie -- who could also be the object of the word "my" in the title -- it's almost non-existent. Although Watt has made a sensitive film with a lot to recommend it, the misdirection of the title leaves it short of a full endorsement.
