Overview

Michael Sarne's infamous adaptation of Gore Vidal's Myra Breckinridge finally comes to DVD with this interesting disc from 20th Century Fox. The film is presented in a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1. The film has never looked as good on home video. Interestingly, both the original theatrical cut and a slightly altered special edition are both presented in full on the disc. Supplemental materials include a commentary track recorded by Sarne. He goes into some detail about his intentions with the film, as well as the remarkable, stressful shoot that found him at war with the film's producers. A commentary track by lead actress Raquel Welch may very well be one of the best commentary tracks on any DVD. She obviously understands that the film is reviled, even though it has attained cult status with some people. She openly mocks the film, and yet somehow simultaneously manages to be protective of her work in it. One realizes how diplomatic her comments about co-star Mae West are after viewing the documentary (originally produced for AMC) about the film that is also included on this disc. While it might be hard to believe, Myra Breckinridge has been given a superb DVD release.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Craig Butler
Originally derided as one of the low points in Hollywood history, Myra Breckinridge has since developed a dedicated cult following, with the result that its reputation has risen somewhat. Not that anyone would ever consider it a good movie; it's just that the unintentionally campiness of it has a certain morbid fascination that makes the film watchable. Although Gore Vidal had a hand in adapting his own novel, he seems to have done so without giving it much thought. There's no structure to the film, and little sense. The character of Myron, for example, has not been clearly defined, so that at times he seems to be nothing more than a figment of the imagination, and at other times, a real character. The satire of the novel is unfocused here, with targets picked seemingly at random. And while there are some amusing lines, much of the humor comes from laughing at how inane much of the proceedings are. Under the circumstances, no one could be expected to give a great performance, but Mae West is amusing. Despite its faults, the sheerly bizarre amateurishness of the piece makes it a unique experience -- one that some will relish and others will dismiss.
