Overview

Can seven not-so-superheroes save a city of the future? Based on the comic book series created by Bob Burden, Mystery Men is set in the teeming metropolis of Champion City, where noble superhero Captain Amazing Greg Kinnear keeps the peace and sees that justice is done. When Captain Amazing mysteriously disappears, his archenemy Casanova Frankenstein Geoffrey Rush sees his opportunity to seize power and bend the city to his evil will, with his associate Dr. Annabel Leek Lena Olin at his side. However, Casanova will not succeed without a fight, as the The Mystery Men leap into action. The Mystery Men are not your ordinary Men of Steel; in fact, they're barely superheroes at all. Mr. Furious Ben Stiller has one gift: throwing tantrums. Blue Raja Hank Azaria is a deadly hand with spoons and forks but not knives. Shoveler William H. Macy can dig with superior speed and force. The Bowler Janeane Garafalo rolls the ball with superhuman precision. Spleen Paul Reubens has a gaseous problem that he's turned into a weapon against evildoers. Invisible Boy Kel Mitchell is convinced he can become invisible at will, but he hasn't actually done it yet. And The Sphinx Wes Studi does have an unusual power: he can cut metal objects with his mind. Aided by addled gadget master Dr. Heller Tom Waits, the Mystery Men make their move against Casanova and Annabel, who feel just threatened enough to make things personal by kidnapping Mr. Furious' girlfriend Monica Claire Forlani. Mystery Men marked the feature directorial debut of Kinka Usher, who previously directed such ads as the Taco Bell talking chihuahua and the Dairy Association's "Got Milk?"

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Jason Clark
Though it suffers from a bloated production and an overabundance of the hipness quotient, Kinka Usher's inventive, often uproariously funny outing deserves credit for its funky, offbeat casting and a genuine sense of satire. The film may have been more successful if given the solid B-movie treatment that Neil Cuthbert's knowing, smart screenplay deserved, but for every scene that lands with a thud, there's two or three that soar, and the comically gifted performers milk every situation for its full potential. One might argue that letting these actors run wild with such a shaky foundation is a bad idea, but they all give fun-loving, devoted performances, and the superhero genre gets an effective tweaking while still delivering the goods as a big summer movie (though the film's protracted, numbing last reel grows tiresome very quickly). Released in August of 1999, the film was hugely unsuccessful, making only a fraction of what it cost to produce, and audiences stayed away in droves. Presumably, the marketing was unsure as to who the film was made for -- which, quite honestly, is part of its appeal.

A goofy and wacky movie that is fun

This was a cool movie. It had very goofy jokes in it and the cast was awesome. It is a rare action comedy with alternative humor. I liked it.

    Mystery Men

This comedy of superheroes is about ordinary people who have a special talent to use to battle crime with catchy names and having to help another known superhero captured by a villian which backfires and having to stop the villian anyway.

    Twisted Funny

This movie is one of those wacky funny laugh way too much movies. The actors are great. The parts they play are totally ridiculous but they pull it of. Watch it for the fun of it. Not for anyone looking for an Oscar contending movie.

You'll Love It or Hate It, But Nothing Inbetween

This is one of those movies that will separate those with a nerdy/weird personality and sense of humor from those who have a more mainstream bent. In other words, I think you will either totally love or completely hate this movie, nothing inbetween. I totally loved it! Blue Raja is my new favorite hero. I think the main message in this movie is that even those who may be very different from the 'norm' and rejected by others can hone their unique talents, excel at their craft, and discover that self-esteem can be much more valuable than the fleeting/disingenuous esteem often bestowed on us by other people.

    Great movie!

All the other reviews have pretty much given you the plot. My favorite character was the Blue Rajah. No, wait! The Bowler! No... I guess I like them all. Anyway, it was a great movie. Sure it's not gonna win the oscar award, but what did you expect?

Check your attitude at the door

The key to appreciating Mystery Men is in how you approach it. Come in expecting a serious, Academy Award worthy performance and you'll go away angry and disgusted. But if you have a sense of humor, a taste for ironic farce, and a keen appreciation of satire, Mystery Men is an amusing and satisfying gem of a movie. It's a hilarious send-up of the conventional heroic myths, as well as a touching endorsement of the ordinary heroics of just being yourself.

Take it for what it is - Funny

This movie is not going to win any Academy Awards, but your not going into it thinking it is. This movie has some of the most classic characters and funny lines. This movie reminds me of playing superhero when I was kid. Go into the movie looking for a good time and you will. Worth seeing!

    Trash

This is one of the worst movies I have ever seen. I cannot believe that the previous review was written by someone that has actually seen the movie. It was through sheer morbid curiosity that I watched this movie in its entirety.

    ''Action-Packed and funny''

This is a great movie and you must see it. Seven non-superheroes must save the world. Captain Amazing, the protecter of a future city, is kiddnapped. A group of superheroes must get more people to help rescue the superhero. The group goes through comecal events to save him. It is funny throughout the film.

    An Underdog Masterpiece!

This could've been such a dud, even with this cast. Instead, it's a near perfect thing, a laugh out loud feel good show. Great performances (from the most mixed bag cast I've ever seen), sensational design, perfect pacing, terrific music (but beware, the original soundtrack CD includes none of Stephen Warbeck's great score.) Even the extras on the DVD are superior--Kinka Usher's commentary really adds something. I hope I don't wear out my copy.

    Boring

This film is a fine example of how to waste talent and charge people to see it. The premise was great, but the writing is a flop of Grade A proportions. Not even the most talented actors could bring this one off. ''Mystery Men'' is not worth owning, renting, copying or asking anyone about it.
