Overview

Over a thousand years ago, one earth's most advanced societies vanished, leaving behind temples, the ruins of cities, and works of art in the now-overgrown jungles of present-day Mexico and Central America. We call them the Maya, and the abrupt end of their civilization is still a mystery, although the people live on, still carrying forward some of the ancient traditions. There are many theories and many tantalizing clues left behind in their hieroglyphics, only recently interpreted, but archeologists still don't know for certain what happened. This special includes reenactments of ancient Mayan rituals along with scenes of the ruins. ~ Leslie Birdwell
