Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Michael Hastings
Though it'll never be confused with Animal House, National Lampoon's Van Wilder at least supplies a healthy dose of righteously R-rated, un-p.c. gags, delivered with effortless charisma by lead Ryan Reynolds. Timing is everything in no-brainer comedies like this, and Reynolds -- channeling Real Genius-era Val Kilmer and Matthew Broderick's Ferris Bueller in equal measure -- gives even the stalest one-liners a sprightly, tossed-off spin. If anything, Van Wilder is too worshipful of the '80s college pics it imitates: the cameos from Erik Estrada, Dr. Joyce Brothers, and other past-their-prime self-parodists are more annoying than cheeky (though the casting of Tim Matheson as Wilder's affluent dad is truly inspired). In fact, about the only thing that indicates that Van Wilder was made in the post-Farrelly brothers 21st century is the emphasis on gross-out comedy, and it handicaps the picture. It's so full of good-natured charm that an elaborate "don't eat the dog-semen-fortified pastry" schtick, for instance, only detracts from the fun.
Boston Globe
Reynold's boyish, sweet-natured comic appeal makes Van Wilder better than it has a right to be.
Hollywood Reporter
For a film like this to work, the hero must be as charming as he is irrepressible, and Reynolds, star of the ABC series Two Guys and a Girl, fits the bill.

    RYAN ROCKS

Wow, I thought this was going to be another American Pie or Roadtrip or whatever movie. WAS I EVER WRONG!!! This movie BY FAR is the BEST movie ever! Reynolds does sucha GREAT job as Van and he fits the role perfectly. This movie should become a classic. I wish I had seen it on the big screen. RYAN REYNOLDS IS THE HOTTEST MALE IN HOLLYWOOD

    A fun visit on occasion

Not much to add here beyond the byline-I have the dvd and the blu ray was a decent price so I figured I would go ahead and buy the upgrade. One drawback and something I still haven't figured out is that some blurays show up full screen on my 50 inch tv. But still Van Wilder is a fun movie that I find myself watching 3-4x a year. Not much thinking invloved, decent jokes, some overkill but hey what do you expect from National Lampon. Ryan Reynolds is fun to watch in this film along with other upcoming actors who are now starting to make names for themselves.
HIghly recommend if this is your cup of tea.

    AWESOME

This is one of those movies that I could sit and watch over and over again. Am I the only one that thinks Ryan Reynolds resembles Jeff Corwin (from animal planet)? I think both of them are very handsome!!!!

    Van Wilder: Reynolds Rocks

I unfortunately chose not to see this on the big screen. However, after hearing good things I gave it a chance and loved it. Reynold's has great screen presence and his quick wit and quirky comebacks provide endless laughs. Reynolds, like Jim Carrey is basically hilarious to watch yet he doesn't have to resort to such lunacy to achieve results. He's a real talent. Tara Reid compliments Reynold's role as the level headed journalist and Van's love interest. She suprised me actually and gave a nice performance. The support cast is great and the jokes are not only well thought out, but well acted. There's a real charisma between the cast and they all give excellent performances. The movie gets a bit smooshy towards the end but still provides enough laughs to label it a comedy, rather than a comedy/romance. A lot of people pigeon hole this into the teen movie catergory, which really bothered me, as a main feature of the move is it's originality. I can't remember how many times I hit the rewind button but this 90 minute movie went for two hours the first time I watched it. Guaranteed to make you laugh with jokes that cater for all. Can't wait for Reynolds next flick.

    Poetry, Comedy, Hot Chick

I¿ll begin with a confession: I was reluctant to watch this film. It was snobbish on my part. A recent interview with Tara Reid in MAXIM portrayed the actress as a shallow ditz, and I doubted that the voluntary suspension of disbelief would succeed in allowing me to see her as serious college student Gwen Pearson. This was the crux of my objection to NATIONAL LAMPOON¿S VAN WILDER. My husband cleverly defeated my opposition with the ¿Yes, but she¿s a really hot chick¿ defense, and we bought the DVD. To my surprise, Reid pulls off the act, dropping words like ¿pander¿ and phrases like ¿benevolent agenda¿ as if they had belonged in her personal vocabulary bank all along. The writing goes far beyond clever. It¿s down right poetic, with lines dance on the ear like a butterfly on a buttercup. Take, for example, ¿That¿s no bong! That¿s for my shlong!¿ Watch out Shakespeare. Best of all, the movie answers the age-old question: What was Ferris Bueller like in college? Van Wilder (Ryan Reynonds) fits the mold rather closely. He¿s a philanthropist who knows how to have a good time. He¿s funny, good looking, and popular with just about everyone. Brilliant ideas like topless tutors and the naked mile run are a-dime-a-dozen with this guy. Most importantly, he always gets his way. I¿m glad I didn¿t get away with turning my nose up at this delightfully amusing film. So even if you¿re skeptical, give it a try, and don¿t neglect to consider that Tara Reid¿s a really hot chick.
