Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind is no exception. Centuries after war has devastated the earth, Princess Nausicaa leads the people of the Valley of the Wind. Feuding clans fight with planes and tanks as well as swords in a world that is both primitive and futuristic. In addition to her people's conflicts with other factions, Nausicaa must also contend with the insects of the jungle including the Ohmu, a race of giant, intelligent bugs that poisons the surrounding atmosphere - and is spreading rapidly. The setting of this 1984 animation owes much to the post-apocalypse genre spawned by Mad Max and other films, and the political subplot is often compared to Frank Herbert's Dune. However, the heroine here has more in common with the female protagonists of the Disney musicals such as Pocohantas and Mulan; Nausicaa is more concerned with harmony and communication than with conquest and revenge. Sympathetic to the Ohmu, she learns she must approach them with understanding to achieve peace and restore the dying world. This film is beautifully animated and written, and the moral to this ecological fable is difficult to miss. The film was dubbed into English in the mid-2000s, hence the presence of such actors as Shia LeBoeuf, who wasn't born yet when the film was originally made.

Master Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki always enjoyed critical support and a small following in the United States. After winning the Best Animated Feature Academy Award for Spirited Away in 2003, Miyazaki has broken out of his cult status, and his early masterworks have been eagerly anticipated on DVD. Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (1984), the director’s second film, is a post-apocalyptic saga and ecological fable that anticipates themes later developed in Princess Mononoke. Based on a celebrated manga (comic book) series -- also by Miyazaki -- Nausicaa is intended for more mature audiences than the director’s later, lighthearted fantasies, such as My Neighbor Totoro and Kiki's Delivery Service. The setting is 1,000 years following the collapse of civilization, when the last surviving humans are threatened by the spread of a seemingly toxic jungle. Nausicaa (voiced by Alison Lohman) is your prototype strong-willed and independent Miyazaki heroine, who will make a stand to save the jungle from warrior princess Kushana (Uma Thurman). This formidable foe launches an assault on Nausicaa's idyllic valley to awaken the slumbering Giant Warrior, whom she intends to use to destroy the jungle. The distinguished voice cast also includes Patrick Stewart as Nausicaa's mentor, swordsman Lord Yupa, and Chris Sarandon (the evil Humperdink in The Princess Bride) as Kushana's ambitious lieutenant. While not as fluid as his later films, Nausicaa features Miyazaki's dense and detailed design and awe-inspiring set pieces involving such fantastic creatures as the behemoth insect Ohm. According to anime web sites, Nausicaa was previously only available on video in the United States in a criminally butchered version, Warriors of the Wind. With great care and respect, the good folks at Disney have given this landmark film its due.

    Quintessential Myazaki!

    Nausicaa, of the Valley of the Wind is outstanding and has Myazaki's class blend of sci-fi fantasy with down-to-earth characters. The animation is wonderfully realistic,yet ethereal. We loved the sweeping skies and lifelike details. Myazaki's characters show the emotions that each of us feels at some time in our lives.
    The Princess Nausicaa is a dear soul, whose love of place and responsibility show through.
    Excellent, excellent movie!

    A Deep Message for all of Us

    I truly enjoyed this movie. The animation is extremely good, but since it was first released in 1984, the contrast of colors is sort of bad. But that certainly doesn't detract from the movie's depth. I think it has a wonderful lesson for all of us, which is that we have a duty to protect the earth and live peacefully with each other. If we cannot, then we are doomed to a terrible fate as the people of the Valley of the Wind were about to be. We must all find peace somewhere, somehow.

    Long awaited release

    I have a cherished VHS copy that was recorded when this movie broadcast in 1990 on the military network when I was stationed overseas. I have been waiting for the DVD so this VHS copy can be retired. The story line is fasinating, the artwork beautiful, and the characters are still futuristic enough to attract young viewers 20 years after its orginal release. Thank you for making this available to a new generation.

    Incredible adventure that holds up well.  I am very happy with Disney's release.  I remember the first time I saw this film was back in the late 80's with I think the company's name was "new world cinema" which released an edited version (1/4 of the film was cut out of that release) called Warriors of the Wind.  When I heard that Disney was releasing this film, I will admit, I had some apprehension.  But they did a wonderful job and now I am confident in their work and look forward to the Blu-ray release of all of Ghibli's works.

    A True Masterpiece!!!! Awe-Inspiring! Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli have outdone themselves with Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. A great anime movie with soft artwork, compelling characters, and a sweeping storyline.

    Almost Perfect Movie

    Huge fan of Studio Ghibli. This was supposed to be Miyzaki's best film, I don't think it was. The animation is stiff becuase of the age and what's up with the old school video game music. Highly reccomended besides those small problems. Also the ending was horrible.

    An Anime Masterpiece -- finally on DVD!

    I first saw Nausicaa in my teenage years in East LA, at the home of one of my childhood friends. The print we had was a second generation copy of a japanese bootleg brought back to LA. I have never forgotten that initial feeling of complete wonder and amazement at this classic, visionary epic from the master of japanese anime -- Hideo Miyazaki-San. I have waited over 15 years for this breathtaking film to be released on DVD. The wait has been worth it. The transfer is pristine and well saturated. Well worth the long wait. Anyone coming to this incredibly unique film will be instantly struck by the beautifully crafted and intricate story line, jaw-dropping animation and visual style, and the sheer magesty that is Nausicaa. This DVD will go right up on my top shelf alongside Scorcese, Fellini, and Ingmar Bergman.

    Great Movie

    When I heard Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind was coming out on DVD I was ectatic. It's an absolutely wonderful film made with the great imagination that is Hayao Miyazaki. Not only is it a great movie but it also has great morals. I would recommend it to anyone.
