Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble
One of the major anime works of the last decade, the 1995-96 television series Neon Genesis Evangelion was a blast of fresh air in a medium that is sometimes marked by cookie-cutter sameness. Director Hideaki Anno Gunbuster used the medium as no one had before: as a means for personal expression and for exorcising private demons his troubled relationship with his father casts a shadow over the story. The gamble paid off: Eva is both a must-see pop hit and a rare example of creativity uncompromised by the usual market forces. In the far future, after an unspecified disaster known as the Second Impact, Earth is attacked by hostile beings called "Angels." To combat these immense enigmatic foes, a scientist named Gendo unleashes psychically powered, semiorganic battle robots known as "Evas." After a string of costly failures involving the Evas and their child pilots, Gendo reunites with his introverted, estranged teenage son, Shinji, only to use him as a tool in a struggle with truly apocalyptic implications. Eva takes a few cues from 1970s Japanese pop classics like Ultraman and robot shows like Mazinger Z, and then blasts off for the twilight zone. Conspiracy, mystery, and religious imagery figure heavily. But more than the doom and gloom, it is the complex and endlessly fascinating characters who make Eva sparkle and come to life -- the beautiful but haunted waif Rei and the spunky redhead Asuka are fine foils. With its controversial final episode, which shocked the original viewing audience, the only possible comparison for the series may ultimately be to David Lynch's Twin Peaks. Still a unique and wild ride by any standard, Neon Genesis Evangelion is anime's equivalent of a primal scream. Volk Lindsay

    A search inside

I think that this series is one of the greatest animes ever. I makes you think about who you really are and what the world really is.

    Just 5 cause there's no 6... :)

The best of the Best !! I only found annoying those small text's that explain some japanese text, besaides they should use some kind of option so you'll see the first time with those lines and the second without them, the spanish version is good, better than the english version, the people that knows some spanish will find me right about this but still some small things to make it better.

    The Beginning

This is the beginning to what is the greatest anime series of all time. The animation is good, and the plot develops at a good pace, letting you know only tid bits of information, and make you seriously think about things (yes I know, thinking seriously is a shocking concept for some people). Highly recommended series!

    The end of the end?

Neon Genesis Evangelion is, in my opinion, the best piece of animation ever made. The characters are realistic and their personalities are fleshed out, the colors and directing and fabulous, and the storyline is to die for. I think what I liked best about Evangelion is that it makes you THINK. It presses some issues that are pretty interesting, and hints that man himself is trying to become a god. If there is ever an anime to see, it is this one.

    ADV is trying hard

Cover design is good. The Misato insert (looks the same as the video #2 cover) inside is pretty nice since dvd #1 is a combo of video 1 & 2. I'm impressed by the CD design too. The sound of the opening song in the main menu is kinda annoying cos viewers can't get away from it. so as the ADV opening of each episode. So if you ADV are going to release any more of Eva and other titles, don't put the song in the menus, just put a mellow sound track like how you did in the 'communication' interactive page which is actually nice. But don't just put HALF of the sound track, have it complete and recycled. I don't see anything wrong in the first episode, but in others. Were ADV trying to enhance the picture but was way too much that viewers can see the pixels like low res jpegs. And also the credits and subtitles were nice already in the vhs version. Why bother to retype the credits in bolder serif fonts and change the subtitles in big yellow comic types? You (ADV) want them to be visible, but you had them too stand out and big. Also, use san serif where the original uses san serif (helvetica bold would be the best) and so as to the serifs. It counts a lot to the emotional effects of what producer is trying to obtain. It was quite an effort to translate all the japanese to english in the scenes, but please remain the feeling of the original image cos where there's translation is always more contrasty and sharper than the rest of the image, which again, made the words pop out and not look right. The language credits with the rerun of the ending is redundant. Have the credits run on darkened ending or total black, desirably use the karaoke version of the 'Fly me to the moon'. There's one in one of the episodes. You (buyers) will know what i am talking about when you get one. The four language approach is really nice. Hang in there, ADV.

    If you're reading this...

If you're reading this, you probably don't need a review; you already know what Evangelion is all about. If not, this is very technical, detail oriented animation with very powerful imagery. There is a great deal of anime that is drawn much looser; more in the style of comic books. This piece takes advantage of colors and the possibilities inherent in animation. I would compare it to Ghost in the shell; very tightly drawn, and powerful, fast moving images.

    The Angel has landed...

The video used is from the ENGLISH DUBED tape, so instead of seeing kanji you can't read you see english that you can. The menu screen is kinda hard to work with, if you need more of a technical review than that go to www.animeondvd.com. On what I've heard this is the best anime ever, in somebody's opinion, but so far I'm not all that impressed. I'm sure a lot of the mysteries get more involving later, like how did Ikari know that the angels would come and what weapon would be able to destroy them? I personally liked it and I'm already saving for the next one, but I was hoping for more plot.
