Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble
The 1996 hit TV series Neon Genesis Evangelion both revolutionized and revitalized anime with a mind-boggling mix of Jungian psychology, savage mecha-action, and unforgettable characters. After the TV show wrapped with an infuriating, controversial ending, puzzled fans demanded an alternate ending that would clarify the many nagging mysteries. What viewers got was not one, but two Evangelion movies, both of which were more idiosyncratic and experimental than the series that spawned them. The first of these films, Death & Rebirth, comprises animation from the TV show, in some cases dubbed with new dialogue, which both summarizes the series and serves to get fans and newbies ready for the all-new events of the second film, The End of Evangelion. But instead of merely going though the TV story chronologically, Death & Rebirth reshuffles events and highlights in order to better lay bare the psyche of its troubled characters. We gain a clear picture of agent Misato's luckless relationships with men, plucky Asuka's fear of abandonment, and introverted teen pilot Shinji's problems with just about everyone. Manga Video has pulled out all the stops for its DVD release with extras that surpass those of the original Japanese disc, including audio commentary and an information-packed subtitle track. the ultimate preparation to the ultimate ending

If you have not watched Eva before, WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN? But watch the series first or at least have some knowledge of the events of it, otherwise you will be confused. the movie is split into two segments Death, a summary of the first 24 shows in the form of a band rehersal, and Rebirth, the begining of the new ending. This really shows how the show progressed from the seemingly genre kid's mecha anime to the mature, depressing sci-fi drama of later episodes. the ensuing carnage at this stage is shocking and that is nothing compared to the third impact in End of Evangelion. even though rebirth is also contained in end i would still recommend this to eva fans who have not watched it in a while. A great companion movie to a ground breaking series

    Almost perfect

I loved this series and the DVD. The one major problem I had with it was that on the features side, everything was dubbed. I only speak English, but dubbed versions loose something, I feel. Especially the comentary version only went with the dubbed version, and the interactive mode only worked in English.
