Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
For more than a decade, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen's devoted fans have been conditioned to check out their latest films on video rather than the movie theater. So, it is not that surprising that New York Minute was a box-office disappointment. But just as the twin tyke-oons make the leap from direct-to-video to the big screen, so are they taking well-calculated baby steps to extend their phenomenally successful careers into adulthood. New York Minute is part Ferris Bueller's Day Off and part Risky Business, but only in the sense that Ashley Olsen's Jane is just as future-focused as Tom Cruise's character was. Jane can't make a move without her day planner. "Remove stick from butt," sister Roxy (Mary-Kate, duh) derisively adds to Jane's schedule. Roxy, a drummer in a rock band, is "the No. 1 truant in Nassau County." On this day, she schemes to cut school to attend a music video taping, and the unwitting and very reluctant Jane goes along for the wild ride. Did I mention that this is also the very same day Jane is to give a speech that could earn her a scholarship to Oxford? A series of misadventures will detour the estranged sisters and bring them closer together (that's what this day is all about, Charlie Brown). As co-producers, the Olsens are savvy enough to surround themselves with A-list character actors, each going above and beyond the call of duty. Eugene Levy is a relentless truant officer on Roxy's trail. Andy Richter is a henchman with an unaccountable Chinese accent. Andrea Martin is a senator, and Saturday Night Live's Darrell Hammond is an ill-fated man who crosses paths with Jane and Roxy throughout the day. Some of the Olsens' misadventures are mildly risqué business. When the senator's hunky son catches the towel-clad twins in his mother's hotel room, he responds, "It's not my birthday." The film has an edgy look, and a soundtrack that rocks, but not too hard. There is no profanity. The Olsens are well at home in front of a camera, always game for slapstick at their own expense. And Full House fans will get a nostalgic kick out of a Bob Saget cameo.

    A Feel Good Chick Flick

OK, we all know Mary-kate and Ashley Olson don't have the greatest movies out there. They mainly focus on children's entertainment. Those movies defined them as tween stars New York Minute declares them as flexible, mature actress's. This movie I love, it has a great story to it. Its definitly their best one yet. New York Minute is about two sisters who have nothing in common and cannot tolerate each other. Roxy Ryan( Mary-kate Olson) is a slung back drummer of a rock band who is hyped on getting a record deal. Jane Ryan (Ashley Olson) is a stressed straight A student who is set on winning a 4 year schlorship to Oxford University. The girls both head to New York, Roxy to sneak into a music video and Jane to compete for her schlorship. Roxy has been cutting school and she is being hunted down by a parole officer, Max Lomax ( Eugene Levy) who thinks he's all that. Everything goes wrong in the girls day when a pirated music chip is slipped into Roxy's bag and suddenly the sisters find out their spending the whole day together running from the pirates, Max Lomax, falling in love, sneaking into hotels and the music video, and learning a lot about each other that either never knew. Basically this is a great movie for anybody. The Olson's put on a great movie that's full of laughs and silly fun. A perfect gift for any fan of the Olsons.

    Not Surprisingly Horrible!

When I first started to watch this movie, I knew that I couldn't expect a lot from it because all of Mary Kate and Ashley's movies are kind of dumb! They're pretty and good people but I can't stand their movies! But I thought since it was going to be in theaters, that it was going to be worth seeing! Boy was I wrong! I couldn't wait for it be over! The Only part in the movie where I wasn't falling asleep was when Ashley went into the bathroom at a dirty store! If you like wasting your time, then you should definetely go ahead and see this movie.

    Okay, but...

You know, this is literally a typical MK&A movie. The girls have some kind of delima, so they try and go fix it but it only makes it worse or the problem just doesn't get fixed. In this case, MK&A are going around Manhattan, getting into one problem after the other... However, of course they somehow meet two cute boys at seperate times and at the end it's all happy and the girls are together with the guys. I mean, cute movie but totally not worth popping it in the DVD player if you're looking for something realistic and meaningful. Well, if you expected those kinds of things from MK&A in the first place then wow. The twins are cute and all but still...I got confused with the plot and was unimpressed by yet again suprise, suprise another happy ending.

    I'd rather eat dirt!

My mom and I went to this movie because it looked like a harmless afternoon. It turns out we were wrong. It was more painful than having a shot. If you're interested in having a terrible day, watch this and "Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen". Nothing can explain how incredibly HORRIBLE this movie truly was.

    Awesome!

I can't help it! I am a huge fan of Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen. So of course, they couldn't disappoint me at all with this movie. I went to see it in theaters and it was really funny and so adorable. I couldn't wait to buy it on DVD. I am also fans of Lindsay Lohan and Hilary Duff! They both rock!

    so so

i was anxious to see this movie, all the hype and press made me think it would be a great movie. But it was horrible!! The whole movie was hard to sit through, it could have been a lot better. As for recommendation- rent it if u want but def don't buy- lizzie maguire, what a girl wants- much better movies to spend on=)
