Overview

A failed effort to revive the big-budget movie musical, Newsies attempted to create toe-tapping, song-and-dance excitement out of the true story of an 1899 strike by newspaper boys against publishing magnate Joseph Pulitzer. The "newsies" band together to protest a pay cut by Pulitzer Robert Duvall, organizing a union to protect their rights and ensure fair wages. They are helped along the way by Medda Ann-Margret, a local dance-hall performer who befriends the boys and provides an opportunity for an additional song or two. Director Kenny Ortega had previously choreographed Dirty Dancing, and composer Alan Menken had provided the acclaimed scores for Beauty and the Beast and Little Shop of Horrors, but their work here failed to capture the spark of their popular successes. Unable to connect with older or younger viewers, Newsies gained a reputation as a major bomb that cut short an attempt to bring back the live-action musical, though in the intervening years it has gained a small but appreciative cult.

Special Features

Three behind-the-scenes featurettes: "Newsies, Newsies See All About It," "Newsies: The Inside Story," "The Strike! The True Story"; storyboard-to-scene comparison sequence with audio commentary; sing-along feature

I'm the King of New York (or so my 3 yr old says).

I've loved this movie ever since I was kid. I'm now in my twenties with a child of my own. And wouldn't you know this is my son's favorite movie. He knows all the songs, tries to imitate the moves, and ask at least once a day if he can watch it. What makes it so amazing is that he was barely a year old when this film captured his heart and imagination. It's not mindless dreck like many kid's movies these days and makes you want to get up and move instead of sit there and zone out. And instead of wanting to bang my head against concrete as he watches it again and again, I enjoy it too.

    The World Will Know

"Newsies" was a very nice little movie that just didn't get enough of it's respect that it desurved. I got 2 copies of the DVD for my 17th birthday so that when my parents get older , they can enjoy the idea of a bunch of New York newspaper boys working for Pulitzer and Heirst in the year of 1983/ Buy this movie!!!!!!!!!!!! It's a must have!!!

    Just the best!

Newsies was the first movie I fell in love with as a kid. It was the first VHS I owned. Now I have it on DVD as well and I'm so pleased with it. I love the special features. It's so fun to see the behind the scenes with their dated 90's outfits!
The movie itself is just the best! The music and dancing are great. The story line is just unforgettable. I never get tired of watching it and feel inspired every time! It is also good, clean fun; which is hard to come by anymore. If you like musicals, you will absolutely love this one!

Best Little Musical that NEVER Made it Big at the Box Office

We borrowed this movie from the library and watched it. The music is FANTASTIC. Both kids and adults will like the story and the dancing is fabulous. I ended up getting the movie as a gift for my daughter and all my kids have watched it over-and-over!

    a musical called the newsies

i've never really been into musicals much but this wasn't that bad and bale was cute. surprised that this was considered bad though some parts were kind of dumb if you ask me. basically you have a strike by newsies the paperboys of an era and trying to get their voice heard. watch if you are a bale fan or love musicals.

    A reviewer

I loved this movie. The 1st time i've seen it is when my aunt loned me the DVD. But I've watched it so many times that the DVD skipped over quite a bit. I finally returned it to my aunt and then I ended up getting it for my birthday. My favorite songs in this movie are king of New York , Seize the Day , Carrying the Banner , & , Santa Fe. Please go down and get this and pention for Newsies 2

    Newsies

This is one of the greatest films ever made by a human. The music makes you want to sing along [actually I have]. The dance numbers are amazing. And untill this movie I didnt even know about the strike of 1899. I am probably one of the younger reviewers but this movie is amazing! Also there are a lot of hot guys singing and dancing their hearts out so that is a bonus. Also Robert Duvall did an awesome job as Mr. Pulitzer. My favorite movie by far.

It was are favorite on till Mr. Bryne mad us do it over, and over, over, its still my favorite though. we have about 40 girls (I am one if the 40) and 20 boys in the class and they would all ways make fun of us because our voices weren't low enough, so it allways sounded funny to me! :) I am or was in the 8th grade and we have an High school TV channel and i was watching it one morning and there they have a higher up class of choir called Broadway and they had additions on the TV and a boy did King of New York, it was good but not as good as you guys. The movie was awesome excpisially they guys!! OMG, can you say HOT? I can!I liked it because it did really did make me feel like i could do anything, whitch i thought was cool! SO KEEP ON ACTING GUYS! YOU ARE SO HOT!!!!!!! LOVE YA KAYLI KORPELA

    the best musical ever!

I know that most of the reviews here are written by a younger crowd, which I am a part of. I LOVED the movie, but so does my older brother, my mother, my grandmother, my aunt and my uncle. My brother actually hates musicals, but he made an exception for The Newsies. Everyone can enjoy this because it is AWESOME!

The most under-rated film of all time

I LOVE NEWSIES!!!!!!!! Everything about it is superb. The acting is wonderful, the songs are some of the best ever, it has great dancing, a great script, etc. etc. etc. It always amazes me how few people have actually seen this movie. It's one of my favorite movies of all time. I highly reccomend it to anyone, even those who are not fans of musicals.
