Overview

A failed effort to revive the big-budget movie musical, Newsies attempted to create toe-tapping, song-and-dance excitement out of the true story of an 1899 strike by newspaper boys against publishing magnate Joseph Pulitzer. The "newsies" band together to protest a pay cut by Pulitzer Robert Duvall, organizing a union to protect their rights and ensure fair wages. They are helped along the way by Medda Ann-Margret, a local dance-hall performer who befriends the boys and provides an opportunity for an additional song or two. Director Kenny Ortega had previously choreographed Dirty Dancing, and composer Alan Menken had provided the acclaimed scores for Beauty and the Beast and Little Shop of Horrors, but their work here failed to capture the spark of their popular successes. Unable to connect with older or younger viewers, Newsies gained a reputation as a major bomb that cut short an attempt to bring back the live-action musical, though in the intervening years it has gained a small but appreciative cult.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Matthew Tobey
Touted by its makers as an attempt to bring live-action musical motion-pictures into the '90s, Newsies fails not because it lacks what the great musicals of the past had, but because it inserts nothing new into the genre, simply rehashing the archetypes and clichés that beat movie musicals to death in the first place. But just because it didn't incite '90s remakes of Bye Bye Birdie and Singin' in the Rain doesn't mean Newsies is completely worthless. For fans who enjoy even the more mediocre song-and-dance flicks of the '40s, '50s, and '60s, it's got just about everything. The songs are catchy and enjoyable, the story is simple and secondary to the music, and the cast isn't bad. Even Ann-Margret is in it, so at the very least audiences may want to squint and imagine they're watching a second-rate musical from the early '60s.

I'm the King of New York (or so my 3 yr old says).

I've loved this movie ever since I was kid. I'm now in my twenties with a child of my own. And wouldn't you know this is my son's favorite movie. He knows all the songs, tries to imitate the moves, and ask at least once a day if he can watch it. What makes it so amazing is that he was barely a year old when this film captured his heart and imagination. It's not mindless dreck like many kid's movies these days and makes you want to get up and move instead of sit there and zone out. And instead of wanting to bang my head against concrete as he watches it again and again, I enjoy it too.

"Newsies" was a very nice little movie that just didn't get enough of it's respect that it desurved. I got 2 copies of the DVD for my 17th birthday so that when my parents get older , they can enjoy the idea of a bunch of New York newspaper boys working for Pulitzer and Heirst in the year of 1983/ Buy this movie!!!!!!!!!!!! It's a must have!!!

    very good

i really enjoyed this movie. the songs and dances are very entertaining, and the enthusiasm of the young cast really carries a sometimes weak script. surprisingly, the people who seem to fail the most are ann-margret and robert duvall, two of the major adult characters. ann-margret's character comes across as unnecessary to the entire story, and robert duvall's portrayal of the neurotic and slightly insane mr. pulitzer is interesting, but bizarre. while the movie drags a bit towards the end, it's worth watching the first half.

Newsies was a classic tale about the struggles in 1800's newsboy sales. The musical was an amazing representation of what was happening, even better, through a musical. This musical has amazing winning numbers, and a fabulous cast including the wonderful Christian Bale, Anne Margaret, Robert Duvall and more! This a great family film and this 90's Disney movie is a great movie for all!! 2 Thumbs Up!

    I Also Recommend:

And the world will know that the broadway show is better.. Newie

And the world will know that the broadway show is better.. Newies, the classic is about a newie (who are kids who sold papers in 1900's) named Jack Kelly. Jack meets Davey and Davey's little brother, Les. But when disaster strikes, the money goes up of the newspaper (the newies had to buy their newspapers). It's up to Jack and the newies to get things back to normal. I said the broadway show is better because broadway show has better dancing and singing. But, if you can't see the broadway show, just buy and listen to the broadwaysoundtrack. Also, in the movie the love interest is Davey and Les's older sister. But in the broadway show, it's the reporter ( which in the movie is a boy).

Love Christian Bale when he was young in Newsies and Little Women and also Ann Margaret did a really good job and so did David the boy from Big before tom hanks appearance. Robert Duvall did a good job and Bill Pullman did a great job and I love all of the songs in Newsies and Newsies is a family movie and it is a Disney movie watch Newsies you'll won't regret it

This is one of the best movies ever made. They call it a box office failure, probably because it wasn't based on filthy sex and stupid crude language but once you see it you will agree that it is one of the finest movies ever made.

    Just the best!

Newsies was the first movie I fell in love with as a kid. It was the first VHS I owned. Now I have it on DVD as well and I'm so pleased with it. I love the special features. It's so fun to see the behind the scenes with their dated 90's outfits!
The movie itself is just the best! The music and dancing are great. The story line is just unforgettable. I never get tired of watching it and feel inspired every time! It is also good, clean fun; which is hard to come by anymore. If you like musicals, you will absolutely love this one!

Best Little Musical that NEVER Made it Big at the Box Office

We borrowed this movie from the library and watched it. The music is FANTASTIC. Both kids and adults will like the story and the dancing is fabulous. I ended up getting the movie as a gift for my daughter and all my kids have watched it over-and-over!

    a musical called the newsies

i've never really been into musicals much but this wasn't that bad and bale was cute. surprised that this was considered bad though some parts were kind of dumb if you ask me. basically you have a strike by newsies the paperboys of an era and trying to get their voice heard. watch if you are a bale fan or love musicals.

I loved this movie. The 1st time i've seen it is when my aunt loned me the DVD. But I've watched it so many times that the DVD skipped over quite a bit. I finally returned it to my aunt and then I ended up getting it for my birthday. My favorite songs in this movie are king of New York , Seize the Day , Carrying the Banner , & , Santa Fe. Please go down and get this and pention for Newsies 2

    Newsies

This is one of the greatest films ever made by a human. The music makes you want to sing along [actually I have]. The dance numbers are amazing. And untill this movie I didnt even know about the strike of 1899. I am probably one of the younger reviewers but this movie is amazing! Also there are a lot of hot guys singing and dancing their hearts out so that is a bonus. Also Robert Duvall did an awesome job as Mr. Pulitzer. My favorite movie by far.
