Overview

For Next Friday, New Line has once again done a great job on a DVD. The transfer, framed at the theatrical ratio of 1.85: 1 (anamorphic), is superb. Colors are sharp and constant and there are no defects. The soundtrack, which includes a lot of hip-hop and rap tunes, is good but not outstanding, lacking any real range. The surrounds in the Dolby Digital 5.1 track are rarely used, but that is far from a surprise. Everything seems centered up front, with clear dialogue and sound that is distortion-free. The DVD for the original Friday was a bit disappointing in the way of supplemental material, but this disc more than makes up for it. There are numerous highlights to this disc, starting with an audio commentary track. Though they seem to be recorded separately, director Steve Carr and Ice Cube talk about everything from making a sequel to where they each began. It also might be the first hip-hop commentary, as it has numerous moments of reverb and vocal styling done after the fact. It's a bit unusual and takes a little time to get used to, but is interesting nevertheless. Next is a rather lengthy featurette with a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the film that includes numerous interviews with the cast and crew. A real plus is an audition tape for Mike Epps. While the video and audio quality are awful, it's interesting to see Epps, a stand-up comic without film experience, interact with Cube. An interesting idea that has been used on other discs -- watching the film with a small box showing the storyboards -- is taken to the extreme here as it can be done for the entire film. In addition there are bloopers and an alternate ending, some strange painting of the Cucamonga locations, music videos from Ice Cube ("You Can't Do It" featuring Mack 10 and Ms. Toi) and Lil Zane ("Money Stretch"). There are also trailers for this film, including the G-rated version and the R-rated version, plus trailers for Friday, The Players Club, and Dangerous Ground. Finally, there are some DVD-ROM features, including access to the screenplay. This is another excellent disc in the Platinum Series from New Line.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Jeremy Wheeler
What really works in the Friday movies are the wild characters and the performances that go with them. That said, Next Friday had a major hurdle to get over when fame called Chris Tucker away from Ice Cube and the crew for this sequel to 1995's laugh-riot Friday. Thankfully, there was still comedy gold to be mined with the introduction of lottery-winning suburbanite Uncle Elroy (Don "DC" Curry) and cousin Day-Day (Mike Epps). While it isn't the scene-stealing performance he would give in Friday After Next, Epps still delivers here and becomes a fine sidekick replacement for Tucker. If that isn't enough, more help is provided once again by John Witherspoon as the hilarious burrito-loving animal catcher Mr. Jones. Unfortunately, Next Friday loses it's comedy steam in the second half, but with such great supporting players and dialogue, it's hard not to have a soft spot for most of this flick. While not perfect, it's still a funny addition to the Friday series and is a welcome one to revisit when you're looking for a few laughs.

    THE WORST 'FRIDAY' MOVIE

I DID NOT LIKE NEXT FRIDAY AT ALL. I MEAN IT WAS NOT NEAR AS FUNNY AS FRIDAY. I RENTED IT FOR SEVEN NIGHTS AND RETURNED THE DAY AFTER I RENTED IT. I WASTED A DOLLAR ON THIS DUMB MOVIE.

    Great

That movie was good. I am a Chris Tucker fan though. They need him back. It makes the whole movie a lot funnier. Ice Cube played a good role. Mike Epps can't take the place of Chris Tucker but he wasn't bad. The white guy was especially funny. I would suggest this movie to all my friends. Siskel & Ebert

If they made this movie on the Friday after the day I died...maybe I would've liked it.

It was very dissappointing to see this Friday continuation. It lacked everything that the 1st Friday had. Especially the humor.DJ Pooh's writing and the humor of Chris Tucker are surely missed in this sequel. The only positive thing that i can say, is that Ice Cube has found his niche as a film maker. It isn't all that great...but then again, that's why I'm writing about it ,while he's being about it. Sorry white folks, if that slipped past ya. If it wasn't for the fact that this version is an ongoing movie with endless sequels (Friday After Next), this would be well worth forgetting.

    A great Sequal!

If you saw the first one, you have to see this one. New characters add a different flavor to the movie. There is no Smokey but Uncle Elroy is a perfect replacement.
