Although this was the Rangers first championship since 1940, June 14, 1994 was the unofficial end of the 54-year drought. The official end to it came on May 19, 2004, when the Calgary Flames reached the 2004 Stanley Cup Finals, as 1994 involved a Canadian team with the opposing Vancouver Canucks and most people remember the '94 Finals for being the last Final Canadian teams played in until 2004. When the news media mentioned the Rangers' win in '94, they mainly mentioned it for the absence of Canadian teams from the Finals until Calgary got there in 2004.
