The new night watchman at New York's Museum of Natural History finds that the job comes with more responsibility than he ever dreamed in this wild fantasy comedy directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ben Stiller, Robin Williams, Mickey Rooney, and Dick Van Dyke. Larry Daley

Overview

The new night watchman at New York's Museum of Natural History finds that the job comes with more responsibility than he ever dreamed in this wild fantasy comedy directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ben Stiller, Robin Williams, Mickey Rooney, and Dick Van Dyke. Larry Daley (Stiller) is a kind-hearted dreamer who always knew that he was destined for greatness, he just never quite knew how. None of his ideas or inventions has panned out, so with a heavy heart, he takes a regular job as a lowly graveyard-shift security guard at the Museum of Natural History in order to provide a more stable life for himself and his ten-year-old son. His first night on the job, however, he finds that guardianship of the museum is far from stable -- at nightfall, an Egyptian spell brings the artifacts and wax figures to life! With Attila the Hun charging to war through the hallways, the diorama miniatures embroiled in a deadly feud, and a two-ton Tyrannosaurus Rex nagging to play fetch, Larry has half a mind to turn tail and run. On top of cleaning up after two million years of historical chaos every night, he also has to make sure that not a single museum piece leaves the building -- from the bratty Capuchin monkey in the African exhibit, to the life-sized Neanderthal in the prehistoric display -- because if morning light falls on an escaped artifact, it will turn to dust. Larry turns to a wax replica of President Roosevelt (Williams) for a little advice on keeping things in tact, but Teddy seems to think that a man of Larry's greatness needs little help. Larry isn't sure if the former commander in chief is right; this is hardly what he signed up for, but he can't pass up the chance to care for a museum where history really does come to life.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide
It's pretty rare for a movie to evoke laughter and delight for audiences both young and old, but Night at the Museum pulls it off. The film stars Ben Stiller as Larry, a divorced dad who's reluctantly given up his dream of entrepreneurial stardom to take a position as the night watchman of the New York Natural History Museum so he can provide more stability for his son. If the sound of an inanely sweet family-oriented comedy makes you want to wretch, however, you have nothing to fear. Night at the Museum occupies itself with Larry's personal story just enough for you to follow him on his wild ride. This film doesn't kid itself: you don't see a movie about a museum where the dinosaurs and mummies spring to life at night because you want to learn a heartwarming lesson. What you want from this kind of fantastical adventure is a couple hours of fun, and this is Night at the Museum's brilliantly simple secret to success. It skips many of the sappy and contrived clichés of the PG realm and doesn't spend too much time revisiting Larry's home life. Instead, the film lets Stiller (along with straight-man co-stars Carla Gugino and Jake Cherry) bring Larry to life through his reactions to what you came to the movie for in the first place: the magic. Stiller is a delight in this regard, at long-last finding a comedic balance between his squeamish, embarrassment-comedy side (à la Meet the Parents) and his over-the-top, bombastic-farce side (à la Dodgeball). With just enough restraint to play the foil for the funny and enchanting special-effects ensemble, he conjures up an average guy we can both laugh at and cheer for -- all while exercising a great skill at physical comedy, of which there is plenty. Stiller throws himself into dives, pratfalls, and chases with impressive energy and deft control (suggesting that he must be in seriously good shape). But along with all the slapstick you'd expect from an adventure comedy, Night at the Museum also benefits from the ironic wit and smart satire of screenwriter Ben Garant (Reno 911!). The result is a clever trick: while your grown-up side is sated with the kind of dry humor that marks Stiller's collaborations with Owen Wilson (who co-stars as a miniature cowboy from an Old West diorama, but spends most of his screen time feuding with Steve Coogan, a miniature Roman Emperor from the warring display next door), the kid in you is free to revel in childish wonder and excitement so completely that when the requisite dorkily happy ending appears in the distance, you probably won't even notice.

This movie made me want to visit the museum of natural histroy. The historical characters were entertainting and I thought it actually had some educational value in introducing these people to kids. It was funny and exciting too.

This movie is one for the entire family. Ben Stiller does an absoultly wonderful job in this movie. When I first saw this movie I wanted to see it over and over again. Kids would love it. What kid dosen't like things in a museum to come to life at night. I wonder what it would be like to be the night guard and be surronded by tons of living things when they weren't real a few hours before. Anyway this movie is great for the entire family with the action, humor, and adventure. There even is a slapping monkey!

Daddy Day Care was funny. I thought that the company could only make movies like Daddy Day Care. "Wich was pretty funny, but not alot" but when I saw Night at the Museum,I was laughing in my sleep that night and I do every time I see the movie! My mom laughs and so does my dad. And I know if there's a funny movie or not because my dad does not laugh easily. And since he laughed in Night at the Museum, I know this movie is very funny. Same with my mom.

This movie should be one of the all time worst by Ben Stiller. I was shocked and appolled this movie. I went to see it expecting a good movie by Ben. Don't worry i won't make that mistake again.

I enjoyed the movie A Night At The Museum it is a very creative movie and fun to watch. One of the reason's I like this movie is because it is a comedy some of the things that are examples of comedy is when Dexter kept steeling Larry's key. Also Dexter kept peeing on Larry. The Easter Island Head was getting smart with Larry that was funny. I also like all th different kinds of animals in this movie.I like when the T.Rex came alive and acted like a dog that was pretty cool.I like how Dexter always messed with Larry and how they always use to fight. The horse on this movie was cool too it was always full of energy and it was real pretty. What I really enjoyed about this movie was all the things that came to life like the caveman he was cool all of them were cool in fact.I liked when the caveman tryed to make fire and Larry had to put out the fire. Also when the people from the civil war was fighting that was nice.It was also funny when Larry had to keep breaking up the romans and the cowboys. All and all this is a very good movie and I recommended to be watch.

I enjoyed this movie. Its about Larry, who is an inventor. He needs to get a job in order for him to stay with his son.So he applies for a job at the museum. On the first night, strange things start to happen. The first reason why I liked this movie is because of the characters. One of the characters I liked is the Eastern Island Head because of the way he talks.I like Akmenrah because he was an Egyptian king. Also I liked the chinese lion statue. He hardly came out in the movie but I like him. The second reason why I liked this movie is because of the settings. The Egyptian room was my favorite setting because inside it looked like a big tomb.I liked the Roman setting because of the colosseum. The last setting I liked was the western setting becuse of the puny train that hit larry. The last reason why I liked this movie is because of the animals.I like Dexter the monkey because he kept on slapping Larry in the face.I liked the T-Rex because he acts like something smaller than him.LOL.I liked the lion because he is the king of the jungle. I would recommend this movie to a science or SS teacher. Also to someone who likes comedy.Sometimes it tells you information about someone or something. Also to kids.Well this is my review either watch it or not!

I also like this movie because of the special effects like when they brout everything aive like the T-REX ect.I really like that because I like dinosaur and the caveman and the caveman was find of funny how are the roman and cowboy was tha small I like this movie because all the animal in the movie lion they was mean and the monkey because he was funny and the mammth because itwas very big. I also enjoyed its action.Like when the romans went to war.Or like all the fighting at the end.Larry and Dexter fighting.Theres a lot more to. Some charaters were funny.Larry was one of them.Teddy was a very helpful person.Or Nick a nice kid to hang with.Last the cavemen were stupid.I enjoyed this movie because it had comedy.Another reason is because it is a kid movie.Another reason is because it had a lot of information.Last reason is because i liked the monkey.

This movie starts off with Larry needing a neew job. He ends up having a job as a night guard in the museum. That wasnt all that happened. The things in the museum came to life at night. Something becomes missing from the museum and Larry asks for help. I like this movie because its a comedy. One section I liked that was funny to me was when Dexter(the monkey) slaps Larry. Another part I liked was when the Easter Island Head keeps saying Dum-dum and he doesnt have a big vocabulary. I also liked the part when Rexy(the dinosaur) acts like a dog, even though he looks mean. Another reason I like this movie is because of the characters. I like Larry because he is sarcastic and he is the main character. I also like Dexter because he pees on Larry. Teddy Rosevelt is another favorite character of mine because hes smart and called Sakajewea a hansome woman. I also liked the fact that the thingss in the museum came to like. One thing that came to life was the caveman. I chose the caveman because one of them burned their hair with a lighter. I also liked the romans because they were so little and they have little roman army. I also liked the cowboys because they were also little and they tried to run over Larry with a little toy train. I would recomend this movie because you learn more about the movie, the past, and more information about different poeple. I would also recomend it if u like history. Or if u just want something to watch.

I enjoyed this movie. First Larry got a job at the musuem so him,and his son wouldn't move from that state. He worked as a night time guard, and found out the animals were alive. The tablet that made the animals come to life got stolen by one of the three old night guards. Two of the three night guards got caught, and the other got away. The animals went outside to catch the one that got away.As they was walking they got caught on t.v.Larry,got the tablet back, and got fired, because the museum was a mess.He got rehired when the boss seened that more people was coming into the museum. I think this movie was funny because the hawaiian head had big crusty lips, called Larry dum-dum, and popped a big piece of gum on his big nose. Another scene I liked was when larry slapped Dexter in his face. It was also funny when the old men beat him up. Another scens was when he was talking to Dexter while he wasn't alive , and Dexter looked at him with a ugly look. Finally I liked when Dexter slapped Larry in his face, andmade some foam come off his face.Another was when Dexter got played by Larry, and took the wrong keys. Finally when Dexter peed on Larry, and started laughing about it. I would recommend this movie because it's funny, and I like funny movies. Another reason is because the animls come to life, and I like animals.
