Night Caller from Outer Space

Overview

This is a bizarre and entertaining piece of filmmaking from the mid-'60s (released in England simply as The Night Caller) that looks as though it's at least a decade older than it actually is -- and that's a compliment. Overview

This is a bizarre and entertaining piece of filmmaking from the mid-'60s (released in England simply as The Night Caller) that looks as though it's at least a decade older than it actually is -- and that's a compliment. Night Caller From Outer Space was among the last British films, and maybe the last science-fiction film, to be made in black-and-white. It only adds to the level of suspense and mystery, getting the viewer to concentrate on the eerie action, and recalling the early Quatermass movies of the prior decade . The presence of a song over the titles that sounds a lot like "From Russia With Love" from the movie of that title places the movie in the 1960s, but it's about the only detail that does; this might be the only movie made in England in 1965, and set in 1965, that doesn't include a single reference to "Swinging London" or anything else contemporary. The film-to-video transfer is splendid, with rich, deep contrasts and vivid detail. The audio is loud as well, and there's not a frame out of place anywhere. The 16 chapters are more than adequate to break down the 84-minute movie's sometimes eerie action, and the disc automatically opens to a very cleverly designed and entertaining menu, offering a filmography of the director and American star John Saxon.
