Overview

Though Night Gallery may not have found the unchallenged success of television legend Rod Serling's previous small-screen endeavor The Twilight Zone, it still gave viewers plenty of chills and a reason to leave the lights on while enjoying a nice little fright. When it was announced that Universal would be releasing the complete first season of Night Gallery to DVD, fans were up in arms at the lack of bonus materials offered by the powerhouse studio -- and even if the release does seem kind of bare-bones, one would be hard pressed to complain about the quality to which the episodes here have been restored. Each episode is presented in 1.33:1 full-frame and looks absolutely fantastic. In addition to offering well-balanced colors and even skin tones, the image is sharp and free of any visible debris or digital artifacting. Closed captioned English Dolby Digital audio is evenly mixed, with little evidence of auditory distortion and optional French and Spanish subtitles. Though there may be no bonus materials to keep fans glued to their screen until the wee hours of the morning, the episodes provided on this collection will certainly keep them awake until long after the credits have rolled.

Do it right, or don't do it at all

What a scam! Anything Rod Serling put his hand to should be released with the utmost care and respect. This DVD set doesn't pass muster without a digital remastering for high-definition (please fix the omissions!) and some sort of attempt at including some special features. I've signed the petition on the Night Gallery website, and I hope Universal Studios takes notice. Sixty bucks retail for a low-fidelity transfer and no extras? And for a total of six episodes? In my dictionary, that spells 'ripoff.'

    DISMAL GALLERY

Rod Serling had standards unlike this set. A great storyteller of television is treated like a piece of shoddy merchandise in this inferior recording. Dismal. Rank. Six episodes of inferior reproduction for sixty bucks? This sounds like an episode that Mr. Serling would have written warning us all of the demons of greed that lurk over us. Waiting for any opportunity to rip us apart; blood, flesh, soul, decency, mind. Leaving us base and used seems to be the goal of this piece of crass merchandising.

    What a Bust!

To say that I was disappointed would be an understatement! There are few extras, only six episodes, and poor picture quality. What an injustice to Rod Serling. I should have just copied the VHS format that I own onto DVDs!

    Where's the value?

The first season of 'Night Gallery' has six hourlong episodes, about 300 minutes. This DVD set has a retail cost of $60, but Universal is not giving it a new digital transfer and is offering nothing in the way of extras. By contrast, the first-season set of 'Kung Fu' includes 780 minutes of digitally remastered footage, has lots of special features, and costs $40. 'Freaks and Geeks' is 900 minutes, has a ton of extras, and costs $70. Buyers are getting stiffed and Rod Serling's memory is being dissed. 'Night Gallery,' as Serling's last hurrah in television, deserves the same respectful treatment given other classic shows.

I truly enjoyed the Complete First Season of Night Gallery

Anyone who liked Rod Serling's Twilight Zone will almost surely like his show Night Gallery. The plot twists and the acting are very entertaining.
The DVD set of the Complete First Season of Night Gallery also has some bonus episodes from seasons 2 and 3. I am looking forward to getting the complete 2nd and 3rd Seasons of Night Gallery when they become available.

    I Also Recommend:

    Twilight Zone in Color

The Night Gallery series is a definate must for collectors of Horror and dark fantasy. By the same Rod Serling that created the Twilight Zone series, Night Gallery is a lot less Science Fiction with similar trademark surprises and twists. A lot of great cameo appearances by the hottest of the 70's actors.
