Makeup wizard Tom Savini's color remake of George A. Romero's 1968 classic follows the original almost shot-for-shot, so quality comparisons are somewhat pointless. The film was clearly made for younger viewers who refuse to watch black-and-white films, no matter how good they may be. The result is passable, but the very fact that the original was made 22 years before makes this version seem almost dated in its restraint. By the time of its release, Romero had already geometrically raised the gore quotient with Dawn of the Dead 1978 and Day of the Dead 1985, so Savini's starting back at square one further lessened the impact of this pointless retread. If this version has anything to offer, it is Patricia Tallman's engaging lead performance as a gun-toting independent woman, one of this film's few elements not lifted wholesale from Romero.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide
Made for reasons of profit (by writer/producer George Romero's own admission), Tom Savini's remake of Night of the Living Dead doesn't seem so much mercenary as perfunctory. Highly watchable and reasonably frightening, it suffers from familiarity for most of its running time, a final third offering the only significant departure from the original. Still, it's a pretty rich story and Savini does right by it, serving up tension, jolts, and gore in good measure. Helping out are good performances by Patricia Tallman and especially Tony Todd, probably the best actor to work almost exclusively in the horror genre. Not a necessary film, and, thanks its familiarity, lacking most of the impact of the original, it's still a superior effort when compared to most of its horror contemporaries.

Some of the BEST zombie effects.

Tom Savini and the makeup effects crew went to morgue and studied real corpses to get the full grasp on what a decomposing body actually looks like rather than guessing. Sure, in concept the original Dawn was great but the bluish-greyish facepaint was really really sad, even for the time. Makeup aside, I felt that the acting was quite a bit better than the original Night. Finally Barbara didn't sit and cry all the time - that just got annoying. If you enjoy zombie movies in general but are looking for a more serious film rather than a campy romp, buy this.

    great

whoever thinks the remake is a total waste... think again. The remake is awsome. Who wants to watch the old one with the lead woman that is weak and scared to do anything? The new movie shows her strong and not afraid of anything. She grows in this movie and you can see that. The old one she just sat there and cried. Both moveis are good but if you like movies with deeper meening that what is just there on the surface see the new one, but still watch the old one to compare. They are both great movies

    it's good

Night of the living dead was okay, but the remake in my opinion is awesome. I think this has great suspense, but it has a lack of gore. This movie is better than the original in my opinion. The original was alright, it had good gore, okay suspense, but I guess it didn't rub me the right way. I love this remake.

I'm Surprised Romero Didn't Sever Ties with Savini Over this Abomination...

This retread is unnecessary. While I'm unable to accurately say how many times this "film" made me laugh, I will say that it should be billed as one of the most laughable attempts at horror ever allotted a budget. Romero is exponentially more talented and this film takes itself way too seriously. The acting is subpar and the atmospherics from the original have been dumped to make way for better-looking zombies. Frankly, I'm shocked with the reviewers on this page. If you like the original, avoid this pathetic remake.

    Still the best...

The first in George Romero's epic trilogy of the living dead. No silly brain-chomping, just a group of diverse people picked to survive the night in a strange house while keeping the walking dead from eating their flesh. In fact, I guess you could call it ''Real World, season 0!''

    It scared my socks off!

This flick, together with ''The Blob'', starring Steve McQueen, was the only movie to ever scare me senseless. I grew up watching the Deadly Earnest Horror Show, so I speak with some authority. Suspend your disbelief, look past the black and white and enjoy this terrifying film that will make you avoid cemetaries for a while!

    It is better

This remake of the 1968 movie is beleve it or not better. It's scarier the zombies look better and the acting is better. It follows the same formula from the first one in almost every scene. This is one of the few remakes that succeeds in improving the first one rent it you won't be sorry.
