Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Adam Goldberg
Behold the horror epic that started the Krueger craze and the Elm Street franchise. This low-budget effort not only put frightmaster Wes Craven on the map, but it slashed new life into the dying horror genre. Nightmare on Elm Street is a surreal and artistic experiment in dark and bloody filmmaking, levitating above the senseless gorefests seen in Friday the 13th. Built upon a brilliant premise, Elm Street became known as a near-masterpiece of post-'70s terror that skillfully blurred the line between reality and fantasy. The character of Freddy Kreuger instantly joined the ranks of infamous modern horror villains. While Jason Vorhees and Michael Myers were steadfast and robotic, Freddy was a humorous sadist who refused to hide behind a mask. The dreamscape and surreal atmosphere that Craven creates is a key reason why A Nightmare on Elm Street remains so haunting to this day. Cinematographer Jacques Haitkin knows how to use shadow and light to his advantage, most notably in the trippy and eerie basement scenes and the moment in which a character is dragged across the ceiling. For a movie with a budget just over $1 million, Elm Street possesses a surprisingly stylish look; even the low-grade special effects manage to be effective. The film is tailor-made for those who like their gore coupled with smart and inventive ideas, a rarity in the horror genre.

    Ultimate Classic horror tale

'One, two, Freddy's coming for you'. Just the thought of the song can send chills down a persons spine, even after the many years the story of Freddy Kruger has been told over and over. The entire scenario of how you cannot escape something that lives in your dreams is downright frightening, since you know that sooner or later, you will fall asleep.. and Freddy knows it.

However, the main thing I love about this movie is Robert Englund. He IS Freddy Kruger, and Hollywood found that out with this new 'Freddy'. Just watching Englund cackle dementedly and merely run his claws across a furnace pipe, just to terrify people is almost beautiful. He absolutely rules the role, and its a pleasure to the audience to see a actor that loves his job. I personally don't see why they didn't use Englund, but the newer movie merely strengthens the love for Robert's Freddy Kruger. He sends chills into people with the most simplest of acts, something that Hollywood has long forgotten.

Amazing Quality - Worth EVERY Penny!

We already know that this movie is an amazing landmark in horror fil history, so I won't talk about that. Instead, I'll talk about the amazing features of the A Nightmare On Elm Street infinifilm Collector's Edition DVD. The packaging - wonderful. The standard DVD case has a pretty scary image of Mr. Krueger on the front, and the 2nd disc is housed in a floppy tray on the inside. A (frightening) slipcase goes over the standard case, which is what you see on Barnes & Noble's website. The movie - excellent. No more to say. The quality of the remastering is just awe-inspiring, and the sound is fabulous. Extra features - where to begin? TONS of bonus features, all of them well worth your while (and the price). While the bonus features menu is a bit vague on what groups its divided into, once you find out what all there is to explore, you will be utterly filled with joy (for lack of better words). I give A Nightmare On Elm Street infinifilm Collector's Edition a 10/10!

    An Original Horror Landmark

After I saw this film for the first time, I couldn't sleep for an entire week, because if I went to sleep, I'd probably never wake up. Freddy Krueger is epitome of inventive horror, he knows what really scares you, and the way that he stalks each of his victims is absolutely frightening. Robert Englund portrays Krueger extremely well. Wes Craven directs the film with a certain flair that rises above the average slasher movies. Heather Langenkamp gives her character, Nancy, the strength to survive, and proves that females can take care of themselves just as much as men do. She is a true iconic film heroine. Johnny Depp has come a long way in film from his first role as Nancy's boyfriend, Glen. He does a great job. Ronee Blakely, and John Saxon deliver outstanding performances as well.

    AWSOME!

The first one is hands down the best out of the whole series! None of the other characters are as cool of a main character as Nancy is. Thats why the first and third movie are the best! This movie is one that won't seem THAT scary as you're watching it, but always make you sleep with the lights on. Has a good story line for a horor film, and is worth watching over and over again!

    A Nightmare on Elm Street

This movie was okay and scary because of Freddy. With the wolverine type claws as the glove and the hat he always wears seemed annoying. Okay movie.

Not too scary but read on...

Okay, why did they kill Johnny Depp? He was soooo hott though you may not recognize him. I just saw this movie last weekend and have watched it a total of 3 times. Once again, they have this 'non-virgins die' thing going on, just like in Friday and Halloween. The acting in here is sometimes downright horrible. But I love it anyways, LOL! One of my favorite parts is when Nancy is running after her dead friend Tina, who is calling her name from inside a body bag. This, of course, is a dream. While running down the hall, she bumps into the monitor who asks for her pass and she goes, 'SCREW your pass!' and runs away. Then the monitor calls, 'No running in the halls!' and has Freddy's knive fingers and is laughing like a maniac. Great ending though I didn't understand if it was jjust a dream on Nancy's or not. This movie makes me laugh. I love Johnny Depp! Rent it!!!

    my favorite horror film

This has got to be one of the best and well known slasher films ever made. Wes Craven (the director) would not be as much of a legend that he is now if it wasn't for this movie. Buy this movie immediatly.

    A Nightmare On Elm Street

A Nightmare On Elm Street, starring Heather Lagenkamp (Nancy Thompson) and Robert Englund (Freddy Krueger) was absolutley brilliant. I love Heather Langenkamp, she played an awesome role as Nancy Thompson. She is a wonderful actress, and she is beautiful. She was the power and control to defeat Freddy Krueger, who was the evil villan who controled the children of Elm Street's nightmares, and murdered them in their dreams, but their dreams were actually reality. Wes Craven is brilliant to write this movies, and as always, Heather Lagenkamp is gorgous.

One of the better slasher films!

The original Nightmare On Elm Street is by far the best in the series. It's different from other slasher films. Very few slasher films have plots. This is certainly one of them. This film actually features good acting and a good plot. The insane murderer is actually scary. It's a shame what happened to the series of the films. Freddy got less scary and became stupider. There was the use for the other films but this one is good. This is the only film I recommend seeing. It is purely a classic horror film that won't be forgotten easily.

    ULTIMATE TEEN AGE HORROR FLICK

This movie is original and surrealistic. It captures the youths most fake fears and becomes reality. Sleep is a tool in which your body rejuvnates itself, and Freddy dominates their dreams in which it breaks down their inner most escapes.

    DON'T FALL ASLEEP!!!

Nancy(Heather Langenkamp)is having nightmares, about a creepy looking guy with a glove with blades on his right hand. Her High School friends are dreaming are dreaming about the same guy.Her friends later get killed while dreaming. And if you die in the dream you are dead for REAL!When the Highland Police ignore her explanation, she herself must confront the dream killer in his shadowy realm. This is a really good movie, trust me! Stars Heather Lagenkamp,John Saxon,Ronee Blakley, and Johnny Depp. From the master of horror Wes Craven(Scream series).Rated R for language, gory violence.
