Nine Queens

Overview

Gaston Pauls and Ricardo Garin star in director Fabian Bielinsky's Nine Queens. The film is presented in an only mediocre 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer. While the colors and black levels are generally solid and well saturated, there are a few spots where the image sports a softness that can be distracting to the viewing. Otherwise this is a passable transfer with accurately represented flesh tones. The soundtrack is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround in Spanish with optional English and French subtitles. The mix sports a fine array of surround sounds and directional effects without any hiss or distortion to detract from the viewing. Overall Columbia has done a fine job with this pleasing Dolby 5.1 mix. Unfortunately, the only extra features included on this disc is a theatrical trailer for the film, plus additional theatrical trailers for the films The Lady and the Duke and My Wife is an Actress.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Todd Kristel
This movie isn't particularly original, it isn't particularly deep either (although it could be considered a commentary on Argentina's economy), and some of the details don't quite make sense if you scrutinize them. But if you enjoy con-artist films in which nothing is as it seems and nobody is sure whom to trust, then you'll probably find this movie to be a fun ride. The plot has plenty of clever twists and turns to keep viewers on their toes, and the lead actors Ricardo Darin and Gaston Pauls have a good rapport as the two cons who may or may not be able to trust each other as they attempt to make the big score. Granted, the movie does have its flaws. For example, some of the plot coincidences seem rather far-fetched, although that's not suprising for this type of film. But the story moves along at a reasonably brisk pace and the movie has enough humor to keep it from getting too leaden.

    Five Stars for Nine Queens

This movie is clever, seductive, and engaging. I watched it, watched the ending again, and now I need to watch the entire movie again. The characters are marvelous and the plot slick brings to mind "The Usual Suspects" and "Shawshank Redemption."
