Removed from the typical futuristic element of most Japanese animated adventures, this 1994 feature takes place in more of a sword-and-sorcery epic set in feudal Japan. Jubei Kipagami, a ninja mercenary, wanders the countryside in search of work. On his travels, he encounters Kagero, a female ninja whose poisoned blood causes her pale skin to be lethal to the touch. Jubei rescues the woman from Tessai, a creature made of rock. They later find that Tessai is one of the Eight Devils of Kimon, who are involved in a plot to overthrow the Shogun. A story of impossible love between Jubei and Kagero is somewhat interesting, but the true draw of Ninja Scroll is its action sequences. The dazzling swordplay of Japanese live-action samurai movies is not often seen in the animated genre, which tends more towards science fiction; however, this animated work has fight scenes in abundance. Although its content is too strong for children, adult fans of Japanese animation, samurai films, and fantasy should find it enjoyable.

Barnes & Noble - Patricia Kim O'Cone
A mysterious ninja for hire, a bold ninja girl, and a Buddhist monk-turned-spy set the bloody stage for Ninja Scroll, an action-packed anime melodrama that serves equally well as intelligent cinema. Kagero is a ninja girl suffering a curse -- she is beautiful but sexually poisoned and thus untouchable. When drifter ninja Jubei comes to Kagero's reluctant rescue, a Pandora's box is unwittingly opened, infuriating the power-hungry Shogun of the Dark clan. Bound by fate, Jubei joins up with the monk, and the rag tag triad embark on a mission of vengeance. With brilliantly stylized animation by Mad House, the minds behind the apocalyptic masterpiece X, Ninja Scroll acts as a period piece with uncanny parallels to today's society. Investigating the power of greed, human kindness (or lack thereof), and women's roles, Ninja Scroll puts an interesting spin on an epic morality tale and makes for great animated entertainment.

This is probably the best movie I have ever seen. The images and stunning and the effects are spectacular. The way the fight scenes are is amazing. I like when everyone gets chopped in half by that big blade in the beginning. The story line is very good too. I think more american cartoons should be like Ninja Scroll. It is very entertaining and for the whole family. Two thumbs up.

Ninja Scroll has one of the best plots that I have seen from an anime in a good time. The story flows well from one point to another. The fighting scenes (while seemingly over gruesome) are actually are well placed and fit perfectly with the atmosphere of the movie. Has losts of nudity, and sex though and should be viewed by older audience.

This is, with out a doubt, the best anime I have ever seen. The action is perfect and on point, the animation itself is wonderful, and the story line is very interesting and will have you wanting to see it again and again. By the way the nudity and sex scenes aren't to shabby All who like animated films should check this one out.

When I first saw this movie, it was being displayed by a merchant who only had the original Japanese language format and titled ''Beast Warrior Chronicle''. I was mesmerized by it. The scenes and action sequences were amazing and they drew me in like a fish on a hook. That day I had to have it, though I don't speak a word of Japanese. After watching the entire movie at home, inspite of the language barrier, I understood what was going on and loved it. Yes, it was that well done. A year later, the english subtitled version was released in the US as ''Ninja Scroll'' and of course I had to have that version. So, finally I could read and understand what was being said. Well, I loved it even more. It was then re-released dubbed in english. Needless to say, I now own 3 versions of this movie and would not part with any of them. If you're new to this genre, welcome to mature anime, it's a fantastic place to start. If you're an old hand, you probably already have this.

This story revolves around a ronin samurai during Japan's feudal period by the name of Jubei. And Kagero a female ninja enlisted in the Shogunate's army. During an investigation into a quarantined area, Kagero's unit is attacked. Kagero is the only survivor of the group but is captured by the enemy. Jubei comes to Kagero's rescue after which they unite to battle the forces responsible in the attack. Ninja Scroll involves traits from all genres of movies. The action hardly ever stops, conveyed through beautifully animated swordfights. The artists drawing style seems to compliment the time period of the movie. There is also a bit of romance involved, played out by Jubei with Kagero. The content of the movie is not very well suited for younger audiences as it contains violent and explicit scenes. Action fans as well as anime fans should consider this product.

One of the best anime movies I have ever seen. It is for adults - full of violence which is appropriate for the story and it does have a tiny bit of nudity/sexual scenes. The enemies the main character has to face have almost magical abilities like many of the older kung fu flicks. You don't have to like anime to like this movie.

Ninja Scroll, is definately a great anime. The story is captivating and it'll keep you on the edge of your seats all through the movie. The fight scenes are superb, so is the drawing. Jyubei [the main character] is really hot. Well, anyway...the tale is one of bitter sweet romance. It is mandatory for a Japanese anime freak to see this movie. If you don't, then you're incomplete. Trust me, you DON'T know what you're missing.
