Overview

Barry Sullivan plays an eager young lawyer who is willing to sacrifice any and all scruples on the upward climb. He is put on retainer by a gangster, and soon is ankle-deep in an insurance racket. When he wants to pull out, Sullivan is framed for a gangland murder. No Questions Asked was in line with the harsher, less frothy fare produced by MGM during the Dore Schary regime. The screenplay was by former radio gagman Sidney Sheldon, who would later carve a literary niche for himself in the best-seller market of the 1970s.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Craig Butler
A tasty little "B" level noir thriller, No Questions Asked is the kind of neat little film that, despite its flaws, exerts a hold on the viewer. Sidney Sheldon's screenplay starts out with a slam-bang opening, leading into a flashback that captivates for a good while before losing its way a bit in the middle and then getting back on track in time for a good, solid climax. The racket in the story is a fine one, and the double cross situation is well laid out; all that the writing really lacks is a scene that pays off if a really big way, settling instead for several memorable scenes that just fall a little short. Director Harold Kress has an enjoyable time finding ways to add to the natural tension in the screenplay, and he's aided by the atmospheric cinematography of Harold Lipstein. Barry Sullivan is okay in the lead, and Arlene Dahl looks smashing, but the stand out performance is by Jean Hagen, giving her considerable all to a supporting role and stealing the picture with her well-turned performance.
