This is a fine set from Universal that also boasts a truly original packaging gimmick. The set is available wrapped in an orange parka that has a working zipper topped off with a moose-shaped pull tab. This is a fine disc that will easily please fans of the show.

Summer replacements rarely achieve landmark status in TV, as networks typically use the off-season to burn off shows they had second thoughts about after ordering them. When Northern Exposure debuted on CBS in July 1990, it was easy to see why CBS suits had been reluctant to go to air with it: Compared to the conventional fare that defined A. C. Nielsen’s Top 20 prime-time network shows for the 1989-90 season, this offbeat hour-long ensemble program seemed much too weird to succeed. Perhaps audiences were primed for the peculiar -- Twin Peaks began its brief and sensational run three months earlier -- but the show’s instant success more likely reflected the fact that Northern Exposure is just flat-out refreshing and fun. This Season 1 set collects the eight episodes CBS aired that summer, and there’s not a weak outing in the bunch. The story opens with Dr. Joel Fleischman’s arrival in Cicely, a tiny Alaskan town in which the recent Columbia Medical School graduate will have to serve for several years. Alaska picked up his med school bills; and while the Manhattan native thought he’d repay the debt working in Anchorage, his benefactors in the Forget-Me-Not State had other ideas. As the fish-out-of-water at the show’s center, Rob Morrow is the quintessential smart, spoiled, New York brat that America loves to hate; but it’s the supporting ensemble that lifts Northern Exposure to the level of TV classic. The cast includes: Barry Corbin as Maurice J. Minnifield, a retired astronaut with legacy issues who’s bent on turning Cicely into a prime destination for sportsmen; Janine Turner as Maggie O’Connell, an air taxi pilot and Dr. Joel’s landlord; John Collum and Cynthia Geary as watering-hole owner Holling and his teen fiancée, Shelly; and Peg Phillips as general store proprietor Ruth-Anne. Breakout newcomers in the cast include future Sex and the City regular John Corbett as Chris, the laid-back local DJ, and Darren E. Burrows as Ed, a wide-eyed young man who does odd jobs for Maurice and dreams of becoming a filmmaker. Last and certainly not least is first-time actress Elaine Miles as Marilyn Whirlwind, the Eskimo assistant in Dr. Joel’s office, whose deadpan delivery and native wisdom won her many fans. Conceived by St. Elsewhere producers Joshua Brand and John Falsey, Northern Exposure proved that quirky can work on network TV, paving the way for future oddball faves, from Ed to Ally McBeal. It’s truly a pleasure to go back to Cicely, after all these years.

Love Northern Exposure, but I'm boycotting future editions on principle because Season One is not close captioned, which is a disgrace. I'm not deaf but I must ask, why should the deaf community be denied the pleasure of watching this great show? .....................

Be aware that the first season was only 8 episodes long, and I believe the second season was equally short. Only with the third did the seasons become full length. Having said that, however, I have fallen in love with this show all over again, and eagerly await the release of the subsequent seasons.

Finally, what NXer fans have been waiting for! I can only hope that the rest of the series is released in a timely fashion. With only 11 episodes available on video, and no cable channel showing Northern Exposure, fans' best hope to see episodes like Dinner at 7:30 is DVD. Don't disappoint us!!

I actually got into this show recently because my boyfiend had taped a few shows from the show. After watching it I was hooked! So I got the first season watched it within a week and then watched the season 2 in a week. I can't begin to say how great this show is, except for the fact that I don't usually buy tv shows unless I really love them.

If you were a fan of this series dont hesitate, buy it, as stated Im hooked once again, please release the rest of the series.

I've been looking forward to this one for quite sometime, but one should note that despite the great wrapper the contents are limited to the eight part first season. Most sets include a full 22 episodes or adjust the price appropriately. In this case, the number is low, but the price remains. I hope that the seasons that follow don't share that proportional characteristic.

CAN WE EXPECT MORE?? I agree with SERIOUSLY DISAPPOINTING, the cheap way this set was produced, but I LOVED THIS PROGRAM. It was slightly 'off the bubble' but quirky fun. When will the next seasons be available??

THIS IS THE WORST EXCUSE FOR A 'BOXED SET' THAT I HAVE EVER SEEN. NX FANS HAVE BEEN WAITING A LONG TIME FOR THIS RELEASE AND THIS IS THE BEST THEY CAN DO!? WE DESERVE BETTER. YES, I AM THANKFUL TO HAVE DVD COPIES OF THESE FIRST EIGHT EPISODES, BUT THE PRESENTATION ... UGH. NOWHERE DOES THE PACKAGING PROVIDE ANY INFORMATION ABOUT THE CONTENTS OF THE SET, THE ONLY WAY TO KNOW THE NAMES OF THE EPISODES IS THE MENU ON EACH DISC. HOW MUCH DID THEY SAVE BY RECORDING ON BOTH SIDES OF EACH DISC? INSTEAD OF WASTING MONEY ON A DUMMY SKI JACKET THEY SHOULD HAVE USED SINGLE SIDED DISCS WITH A LABEL GIVING THE NAMES OF THE EPISODES ON THE DISC. WE NEED A MAGNIFYING GLASS JUST TO SEE WHICH DISC IS WHICH! FOR THE PREMIUM PRICE CHARGED FOR ONLY 8 EPISODES WHY DO WE HAVE TO BE SUBJECTED TO A BARRAGE OF ADVERTISEMENTS BEFORE REACHING THE MAIN MENU. DITTO FOR THE CHEST THUMPING BY THE VARIOUS PRODUCTION OUTFITS INVOLVED IN THE PROJECT AT THE END OF EACH EPISODE. AND WHY DO WE HAVE TO BE DUMPED TO A SUB-MENU AT THE END OF AN EPISODE? GOING BACK TO THE MAIN MENU MAKES MUCH MORE SENSE. 5 STARS FOR THE EPISODES, ZERO STARS FOR THE PRESENTATION. COMPARED TO CHEERS, FRAZIER, MASH, SEX AND THE CITY, ETC. THIS SET LOOKS LIKE IT WAS PUT TOGETHER IN SOMEONES GARAGE.

This was a real retro moment, back to student days and evenings spent laughing out loud at people funnier than students(?) When are the rest of the seasons being released?
Guest More than 1 year ago
Wish this came out sooner, but happy it finally is available. Provides some missing scenes. There is no printed list of show titles and you have to figure out which side of the double disk to play first. 2 disks with 4 programs (2 on each side) totalling only 8 programs. Although it's not much, it brings back great memories and a longing for the second season to become available.

After all the trash that´s available nowadays in TV, it´s wonderful to have the chance to see again a very original and amazing series. Every single episode is better than an entire season of any 'hit' reality show and a lot of the dramatic award winning series like 24 or The Sopranos.

When I read the June 8 review in ALL CAPS, I wrote it off as just a rant but everything he/she said about this set is true. This is the least user-friendly DVD I have come across. This set is significantly overpriced and of poor quality. I won't purchase any future seasons on DVD. The videotapes I recorded of this series are clearly labeled and commercial-free and although the picture quality isn't the best they are still better than this DVD set.

Northern Exposure was one of the best written series that I have seen.I hope all the rest of the series is released soon. Hooked all over again.
