Overview

From 1992 through 1998, the Emmy and Cable Ace Award-winning comedy series The Larry Sanders Show gave late night television talk show fans a tantalizing taste of the conversations that happen not only before and after the show, but during the commercial breaks as well. With appearances by numerous celebrities and hilarious performances by Rip Torn as abrasive producer Artie, Jeffrey Tambor as insecure sidekick Hank, and of course Garry Shandling as the self-loathing host of the eponymous talk show, The Larry Sanders Show pulled back the curtain to reveal the inner-workings of television's most enduring format. Now fans of The Larry Sanders Show can own twenty-three of the series' most memorable episodes in this four-volume set that also includes commentaries, documentaries, and interviews with such popular series regulars as Jon Stewart, Alec Baldwin, David Duchovny, and Ellen DeGeneres.

Barnes & Noble - Bill Pearis
Before Sex and the City, The Sopranos, Curb Your Enthusiasm or Entourage, pioneering cable network HBO gave us this scathing satire of the entertainment industry from the mind of Garry Shandling. The comedian, who had previously created Showtime's groundbreaking '80s sitcom It's Garry Shandling's Show, dipped into his experience as one of Johnny Carson's Tonight Show guest-hosts for this backstage look at a fictional late-night talk show and the fragile egos behind it. They included: Shandling as image-obsessed, insecure host Sanders; his needy sidekick Hank Kingsley (Jeffrey Tambor), who never met an endorsement deal that was too degrading; and show producer Artie (Rip Torn) who shielded Larry from network suits and seemingly slept with every famous actress from Hollywood's Golden Age. There were also the writers (Jeremy Piven and Wallace Langham), talent bookers (Janeane Garofalo and Mary Lynn Rajskub), personal assistants (Penny Johnson and Scott Thompson) and, in later seasons, Larry's frequent guest host, Jon Stewart. With a who's who of Hollywood's elite playing themselves (including appearances by Jay Leno and David Letterman) the line between reality and fiction was all but erased. While Shandling was the star, The Larry Sanders Show really belonged to Torn and Tambor, whose brilliant performances consistently delivered the show's biggest laughs. For this four-disc set, Shandling cherry-picked his favorite 23 episodes from the six seasons of the series, including: "Hank's Sex Tape," where an embarrassing skeleton in Hank's closet makes its way through the show-business underground; Larry becomes convinced that David Duchovny likes him more than as a friend in "Everyone Loves Larry"; Hank rediscovers his Jewish heritage in "My Name is Asher Kingsley"; Ellen Degeneres almost comes out on the show but instead sleeps with Larry in "Ellen, Is She or Isn't She?"; and the star-studded two-part finale "Flip" features everyone from Warren Beatty and Jim Carrey to Tom Petty and Jerry Seinfeld. While fans surely would have wanted more -- if not all -- episodes (only the first season has been released on DVD), there is a wealth of extras, including deleted scenes, new interviews, a feature-length making-of documentary, and visits with Shandling and his favorite guest-stars. And as one of the funniest shows of the '90s, we'll take what we can get.

If you enjoy humor black, acerbic and bittersweet, this DVD is for you. This behind-the-scenes look at the talk show world of the early 90s is hysterically funny. Shandling's low-key neurosis anchors the show. Allowing Rip Torn and Jeffrey Tambor to practically eat the scenery. The celebrities playing themselves are all excellent. Shout-outs go to Carol Burnett, Elvis Costello & David Duchovny. I could live without the self-indugent interviews between Shandling and assorted cast & guest stars. (My only caveat). I only wish they would put out each individual season.
